FIND THE MISSING TERM IN PROPORTION

A proportion is a statement that two quantities are equal.

If two ratios are equal, then

Example :

Find the missing value in the given proportion.

(1)  2 : 5  =  6 : x

(2)  16 : 20  =  x : 35

(3)  3 : 4  =  6 : x

(4)  3 : 6  =  12 : x

(5)  2 : 5  =  x : 15

(6)  7 : 21  =  x : 33

(7)  15 : 25  =  30 : x

(8)  x : 18  =  32 : 48

(9)  5 : 100  =  x : 40

(10)  x : 12  =  33 :  44

Solution :

(1)  2 : 5  =  6 : x

Product of extremes  =  Product of means

2x  =  5(6)

2x  =  30

x  =  15

(2)  16 : 20  =  x : 35

16(35)  =  20x

x  =  16(35)/20

x  =  28

(3)  3 : 4  =  6 : x

3x  =  4(6)

x  =  24/3

x  =  8

(4)  3 : 6  =  12 : x

3x  =  6(12)

x  =  72/3

x  =  24

(5)  2 : 5  =  x : 15

2(15)  =  5x

x  =  30/5

x  =  6

(6)  7 : 21  =  x : 33

7(33)  =  21x

x  =  7(33)/21

x  =  11

(7)  15 : 25  =  30 : x

15(x)  =  25(30)

x  =  25(30)/15

x  =  50

(8)  x : 18  =  32 : 48

x(48)  =  18(32)

x  =  18(32)/48

x  =  12

(9)  5 : 100  =  x : 40

5(40)  =  100x

x  =  5(40)/100

x  =  2

(10)  x : 12  =  33 :  44

x(44)  =  12(33)

x  =  12(33)/44

x  =  9
