EXPRESSING ONE NUMBER AS A PERCENTAGE OF ANOTHER

To express the given quantity as a percentage of another

(i)  Write the fractional form of the given quantities of one another.

(ii)  To convert fraction or decimal as percentage, we should multiply it by 100%.

Example 1 :

64 marks out of a possible 80 marks

Solution :

Total marks  =  80

He got  =  64

Expressing as fraction :

=  64/80

Converting as percentage  :

=  (64/80) × 100

=  80%

So, he got 80%.

Example 2 :

23 marks out of a possible 40 marks

Solution :

Total score  =  40

He got  =  23

Expressing as fraction :

=  23/40

Converting as percentage  :

=  (23/40) × 100

=  57.5%

So, he got 57.5%

Example 3 :

332 books sold out of a total of 500 printed

Solution :

Number of books sold  =  332

Total number of books printed  =  500

Expressing as fraction :

=  332/500

Converting as percentage  :

=  (332/500) × 100

=  0.664 × 100

=  66.4%

So, 66.4% books are sold.

Example 4 :

140 Toyota vehicles out of 800 cars sold

Solution :

Number of vehicles sold  =  140

Total number of vehicles  =  800

Expressing as fraction :

=  140/800

Converting as percentage  :

=  (140/800) × 100

=  17.5%

So, 17.5% of vehicles are sold.

Example 5 :

An archer scores 97 out of a possible 125 points.

Solution :

Given,

Total score  =  125

His score  =  97

Expressing as fraction :

=  97/125

Converting as percentage  :

=  (97/125) × 100

=  77.6%

So, he scored 77.6%

Example 6 :

24 of 60

Solution :

Expressing as fraction :

=  24/60

Converting as percentage  :

=  (24/60) × 100

=  40%

So, the answer is 40%

Example 7 :

220 mL of 2 L

Solution :

1 liter  =  1000 ml

2 liter  =  2000 ml

Expressing 220 mL of 2 L as fraction :

=  220/2000

Converting as percentage  :

=  (220/2000) × 100

=  11%

So, the answer is 11%

Example 8 :

€1.20 of €300

Solution :

Expressing 1.20 of 300 as fraction :

=  1.20/300

Converting as percentage  :

=  (1.20/300) × 100

=  0.4%

So, the answer is 0.4%

Example 9 :

$8.50 of $2000

Solution :

Expressing 8.50 of 2000 as fraction :

=  8.5/2000

Converting as percentage  :

=  (8.5/2000) × 100

=  0.425%

So, the answer is 0.425%

Example 10 :

350 g of 1 kg

Solution :

1 kg  =  1000 grams

Expressing 350 g of 1 kg as fraction :

=  350/1000

Converting as percentage  :

=  (350/1000) × 100

=  35%

So, the answer is 35%

Example 11 :

16 hours of 1 day

Solution :

1 day  =  24 hours

Expressing 16 hours of 1 day :

=  16/24

Converting as percentage  :

=  (16/24) × 100

So, the answer is 66 2/3%.

Example 12 :

David receives £5 from his Grandmother. He gives £2 to his sister. Write down £2 as a percentage of £5.

Solution :

Amount David receives from his grandmother = £5

Amount he is giving to his sister = £2

Expressing it as percentage,

= (2/5) x 100%

= 2 x 20%

= 40%

Example 13 :

Roger scores 6 out of 8 in a quiz. Work out his score as a percentage

Solution :

Total number of questions in the quiz = 8

Number of questions he got correct = 6

Expressing it as percentage,

= (6/8) x 100%

= (150/2)%

= 75%

So, Roger has scored 75%.

Example 14 :

Susan brings 500 flapjacks to a local fair. Susan sells 450 of the flapjacks. What percentage of the flapjacks did Susan sell?

Solution :

Number of flapjacks brings = 500

Number of flapjacks she is selling = 450

Percentage of flapjacks she sells = (450/500) x 100%

= (45/50) x 100%

= 45 x 2%

= 90%

Example 15 :

Write 94 out of 200 as a percentage.

Solution :

Total marks = 200

Writing 94 as percentage of 200.

= (94/200) x 100%

= 47%

Example 16 :

James scored 30 out of 90 in a music test. He scored 48 out of 150 in a drama test. James scored 35 out of 120 in an art test. In which test did James score the highest percentage? You must show your workings.

Solution :

Percentage of music test = (30/90) x 100%

= 33.3%

Percentage of drama test = (48/150) x 100%

= 32%

Percentage of art test = (35/120) x 100%

= 29.1%

Comparing these percentages, in music test he has scored highest percentage.

Example 17 :

In a village of 3500 people, 12% are left-handed, and 15% of the lefthanded people have blonde hair. How many people in the village are blonde and left-handed?

Solution :

Total number of people = 3500

Number of people who are left handed = 12% of 3500

= 0.12(3500)

= 420

Number of people have blonde hair = 15% of 420

= 0.15(420)

= 63

So, 63 people in the village are blonde and left-handed.
