DIVISIBILITY RULE FOR 3

In a number, if the sum of all the digits is divisible by 3 or a multiple of 3, then the number is divisible by 3. 

Example 1 :

Check whether 252 is divisible by 3. 

Solution :

Add all the digits in the number 252.

2 + 5 + 2  =  9

The sum of the digits in the given number 252 is 9 which is a multiple of 3. 

So, 252 is divisible by 3. 

Example 2 :

Test whether 1326 is divisible by 3?

Solution :

Add all the digits in the number 1326.

1 + 3 + 2 + 6  =  12

The sum of the digits in the given number 1326 is 12 which is a multiple of 3. 

So, 1326 is divisible by 3. 

Example 3 :

Check whether 6471 is divisible by 3.

Solution :

Add all the digits in the number 6471.

6 + 4 + 7 + 1  =  18

The sum of the digits in the given number 6471 is 18 which is a multiple of 3. 

So, 6471 is divisible by 3. 

Example 4 :

Check whether 5986 is divisible by 3.

Solution :

Add all the digits in the number 5986.

5 + 9 + 8 + 6  =  28

The sum of the digits in the given number 5986 is 28 which is not a multiple of 3. 

So, 5986 is not divisible by 3.
