ADD SUBTRACT MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

Example 1 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(2.75 x 10⁷) + (1.23 x 10⁸)

Solution :

=  (2.75 x 10⁷) + (1.23 x 10⁸)

=  (2.75 x 10⁷) + (1.23 x 10⁷ x 10¹)

=  10⁷(2.75 + 1.23 x 10¹)

=  (2.75 + 12.3) x 10⁷

=  15.05 x 10⁷

=  1.505 x 10^{7 + 1}

=  1.505 x 10⁸

Example 2 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(1.598 x 10¹⁷) – (4.58 x 10¹⁵)

Solution :

=  (1.598 x 10¹⁷) – (4.58 x 10¹⁵)

 =  10¹⁵(1.598 x 10² - 4.58)

=  10¹⁵(159.8 - 4.58)

=  155.22 x 10¹⁵

=  1.5522 x 10^{15 + 2}

=  1.5522 x 10¹⁷

Example 3 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(1.02 x 10¹⁰) x (1.20 x 10^–3)

Solution :

=  (1.02 x 10¹⁰) x (1.20 x 10^–3)

=  1.02 x 1.20 x 10^10-3

=  1.224 x 10⁷

Example 4 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(8.41 x 10⁴) ÷ (4.3 x 10⁵)

Solution :

=  (8.41 x 10⁴) ÷ (4.3 x 10⁵)

  =  (8.41/4.3) x 10^4-5

  =  1.955 x 10^-1
