WORD PROBLEMS ON SUBTRACTION

Problem 1 :

Mrs. Farrell’s class has 26 students. Only 21 were present on Monday. How many were absent ?

Solution :

To find the number of students absent, subtract 21 from 26.

=  26 - 21

=  5

So, there were 5 students absent on Monday.

Problem 2 :

There were 1028 books in the library today. If 76 books were bought yesterday, how many books were in the library day before yesterday ?

Solution :

To find the number of books in the library day before yesterday, subtract 76 from 1028.

=  1028 - 76

=  952

So, there were 952 books in the library day before yesterday.

Problem 3 :

In an art competition, 1837 students took part. If 781 among them were boys, how many girls did take part in the competition ?

Solution :

To find the number of girls, subtract 781 from 1837.

=  1837 - 781

=  1056

So, 1056 girls took part in the competition.

Problem 4 :

The temperature at 6 P.M. was 31°F. By midnight, it had dropped 40°F. What was the temperature at midnight ?

Solution :

Visualize a number line. The drop from 31° to 0° is 31°. There are still 9 more degrees to drop. They will be below zero. -9°F is the temperature at midnight.

Problem 5 :

In an Examination, Jack scored 632 marks and received grade A, William scored 75 marks less than Jack and received grade B. Find the marks scored score William.

Solution :

To find the marks scored by William, subtract 75 from 632.

=  632 - 75

=  557

So, William scored 557 marks.

Problem 6 :

Jack sold 1257 meatballs on Sunday. He sold 158 less meatballs on Monday than on Saturday. How many meatballs did he sell on Monday ?

Solution :

Number of meatballs sold on Sunday :

=  1257

Given : On Monday, 158 less meatballs sold than on Sunday.

Then, number of meatballs sold on Monday :

=  1257 - 158

=  1099

So, Jack sold 1099 meatballs on Monday.

Problem 7 :

Distance from place A to C is 183 miles, distance from place B to place C is two-third of the distance from place A to place C. If B is between A and C, find the distance from place A to place B.

Solution :

Distance from place A to place C :

=  183 miles

Distance from place B to place C :

=  2/3 ⋅ (Distance from A to C)

=  2/3 ⋅ 183 miles

=  122 miles

Distance from place A to place B :

=  (Distance from A to C) - (Distance from B to C)

=  183 - 122

=  61 miles

So, the distance from Place A to place B is 61 miles.

Problem 8 :

In a running race, Michael reached the target in 2 minutes 5 seconds and lost the first price by 12 seconds. In what time should he have completed the race to get the first price ?

Solution :

Actual time taken by Michael to complete the race :

=  2 min 5 sec

=  120 sec + 5 sec

=  125 seconds

Given : Michael lost the first price by 12 seconds.

Then, to find the time required to get the first price, subtract 12 from 125.

=  125 - 12

=  113 seconds

So, Michael should have completed the race in 113 seconds to get the first price.
