METRIC UNITS MEASURE UNIT OF LENGTH

mm, cm, m and km are some of the metric units to measure the length.

10 mm = 1 cm

100 cm = 1 m

1000 m = 1 km

1 mm = 0.1 cm

1 cm = 0.01 m

1 m = 0.001 km

mm, cm, m and km are the measures from smaller to larger. In general,

  • if we convert the smaller unit to the larger unit, we have to divide.
  • If we convert the larger unit to the smaller unit, we have to multiply.

Complete each of the following statements.

Problem 1 :

320 mm =  ____ m

Solution :

10 mm = 1 cm

100 cm = 1 m

1 m = 1000 mm

Converting mm to m, here we are converting from smaller unit to the larger unit. So, we have to divide by 1000.

320 mm = 320/1000

= 0.320 m

Problem 2 :

6420 mm = _____ m

Solution :

Converting mm to m, here we are converting from smaller unit to the larger unit. So, we have to divide by 1000.

6420 mm = 6420/1000

= 6.420 m

Problem 3 :

224 cm = ______ mm

Solution :

10 mm = 1 cm

Here we are converting the larger unit to the smaller unit, so we have to multiply by 10.

224 cm = 224 x 10

= 2240 mm

Problem 4 :

888 cm = ______ m

Solution :

100 cm = 1 m

We are converting smaller unit to the larger unit, so we have to divide by 100.

888 cm = (888 / 100) m

= 8.88 m

Problem 5 :

45 m = ____ mm

Solution :

10 mm = 1 cm

100 cm = 1 m

1 m = 1000 mm

Here we are converting larger unit to the smaller unit, so we have to multiply.

45 m = (45 x 1000) mm

= 45000 mm

Problem 6 :

224 cm = ____ mm

Solution :

10 mm = 1 cm

Here we are converting larger unit to the smaller unit. So, we have to multiply it by 10.

224 cm = (224 x 10) mm

= 2240 mm

Problem 7 :

45 m = ___ mm

Solution :

1 m = 100 cm

1 cm = 10 mm

Here we are converting larger to the smaller unit, so we have to multiply by 1000.

45 m = (45 x 1000) mm

= 45000 mm

Problem 8 :

320 m = _____ cm

Solution :

1 m = 100 cm

Here we are converting the larger unit to the smaller unit. So, we have to multiply by 100.

320 m = (320 x 100) cm

= 32000 cm

Problem 9 :

8.73 m = ____ mm.

Solution :

1 m = 1000 mm

Here we are converting from the larger unit to smaller unit. So, we have to multiply by 1000.

8.73 m = (8.73 x 1000) mm

= 8730 mm

Problem 10 :

Jack is 1.36 meters tall. His friend Ian is 5 centimeters taller than Jack. What height is Ian? Give your answer in meters.

Solution :

Height of Jack = 1.36 m

Height of Ian = 1.36 m + 5 cm

Here we have to convert cm to m, converting the smaller to larger unit. So, we have to divide.

1 m = 100 cm

5/100 m

= 0.05 m

Height of Ian = 1.36 + 0.05

= 1.41 m

Problem 11 :

Mary runs 600 m every day. Work out how far Mary runs in one week. Give your answer in kilometers.

Solution :

Number of runs in a day = 600

Number of runs in a week = 600 x 7

= 4200 m

Converting m to km, we are converting smaller to the larger unit. So, we have to divide.

1 km = 1000 m

Divide by 1000.

= 4200/1000

= 4.2 km

Problem 12 :

Somu covers a distance of 25 km 460 m and Adyasha covers 19 km 650 m. Find the total distance covered by them.

Solution :

Distance covered by Somu = 25 km 460 m

Distance covered by Adyasha = 19 km 650 m

Total distance covered = 25 km 460 m + 19 km 650 m

= (25 + 19) km + (460 + 650) m

= 44 km + 1110 m

= 44 km + 1000 m + 110 m

= 45 km 110 m

Problem 13 :

Sibu has a 8 m 56 cm long ribbon. He cuts 5 m 75 cm long ribbon from it. How much ribbon is left with him?

Solution :

Length of ribbon Sindu has = 8 m 56 cm

Amount of ribbon cuts = 5 m 75 cm

= 8 m 56 cm - 5 m 75 cm

7 m + 156 cm - (5 m + 75 cm)

= 2 m + (156 - 75) cm

= 2 m 81 cm

Problem 14 :

Convert the difference of 35 km and 18 km into metres

Solution :

= 35 km - 18 km

= 17 km

1 km = 1000 meters

= 17 x 1000

= 17000 meters.

Problem 15 :

The shopkeeper bought 53 m 79 cm of cloth. He found that 1600 cm of cloth was damaged. What length of cloth was in good condition ?

Solution :

Amount of cloth = 53 m 79 cm

1 meter = 100 cm

= 53 x 100

= 5300 cm

= 5300 + 79

= 5379 cm

Amount of cloth damaged = 1600 cm

Amount of cloth which is good condition = 5379 - 1600

= 3779 cm

= 3700 + 79

= 37 m 79 cm
