Question 1 :
Find the product of m2 and m4
(A) m6 (B) m2 (C) m4
Solution :
m2 ⋅ m4 = m (2+4)
= m6
Question 2 :
The magnitude of the sum of two negative numbers is the sum of their magnitudes and the sign of the sum will always be __________
(A) Positive (B) Negative (C) Zero
Solution :
If we have two or more numbers with same sign, we have to add them and put the same sign what all are having.
Question 3 :
If the dividend and the divisor have the same sign,the quotient is __________
(A) positive (B) Negative (C) Zero
Solution :
If the dividend and the divisor have the same sign, the quotient is positive.
Question 4 :
Represent the following fraction "Five eights" in numerals.
(A) 5/8 (B) 8/5 (C) 5/10
Solution :
We can write "Five eights" as 5/8.
Question 5 :
Mary had 3/4 cup of sugar. She used 1/3 cup of that sugar to make a cake. How much sugar does she left?
(A) 1/2 (B) 5/7 (C) 3/20
Solution :
Quantity of sugar she has = 3/4 cup
Quantity of sugar she used = 1/3 cup of 3/4
= 1/4
Quantity of sugar left over = 3/4 - 1/4
= (3 - 1 ) / 4
= 2/4
= 1/2
Hence the quantity of sugar left over is 1/2 cup.
Question 6 :
The multiplicative inverse of 1/6 is?
(C) 1/6 (B) -1/6 (C) 6
Solution :
Multiplicative inverse of 1/6 is 6/1. That is 6.
Question 7 :
A chemist mixed 6.35 grams of one compound with 2.45 grams of another compound. How many grams were there in the mixture ?
(A) 5.50 grams (B) 7.50 grams (C) 8.80 grams
Solution :
Quantity of mixture = 6.35 + 2.45
= 8.8 grams
Question 8 :
A map is 1.3 m long and 0.8 m wide. Find its area.
(A) 1.02 sq.m (B) 1.04 sq.m (C) 10.4 sq.m
Solution :
Area of the rectangle = length x width
length = 1.3 m and width = 0.8 m
Area of the rectangle = 1.3 (0.8)
= 1.04 square meter
Question 9 :
A copy of English book weighs 0.45 kg. What is the weight of 20 copies?
(A) 9 kg (B) 0.65 kg (C) 18 kg
Solution :
Weight of one English book = 0.45 kg
Weight of 20 copies = 0.45 (20)
= 9 kg
Question 10 :
Find the L.C.M of 32, 48 and 64.
(A) 160 (B) 192 (C) 180
Solution :

Least common multiple = 2 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 3 ⋅ 2
= 192
Hence the least common multiple of 32, 48 and 64 is 192.
Question 11 :
A box is filled with 30 identical balls weighs 3000 grams. The same box when filled with 20 identical tennis balls weighs 2200 grams. What is the mass of the empty box.
Solution :
Weight of 30 identical balls = 3000
Weight of 20 balls when it is in box = 2200
Let x be the weight of empty box.
x + weight of 30 balls = 3000 ----(1)
x + weight of 20 balls = 2200 -----(2)
(1) - (2)
weight of 10 balls = 3000 - 2200
= 800
Weight of 1 ball = 800/10
= 80 grams
x + 20(80) = 2200
x + 1600 = 2200
x = 2200 - 1600
= 600
So, the weight of the empty box is 600 grams.
Question 12 :
Miss Tan had 60 apples and 54 oranges. She gave away twice as many apples as oranges to her neighbours. She was left with twice as many oranges as apples. How many apples did she give away ?
Solution :
Let x be the number of oranges, she gave away, number of apples she gives away is 2x.
60 - 2x + 54 - x = 2(54 - x)
114 - 3x = 108 - 2x
-3x + 2x = 108 - 114
-x = -6
x = 6
2x = 2(6) == > 12
So, number of apples given away is 12.
Question 13 :
Mr Tan bought 1 1/2 kg of sugar and Mrs Lee bought 1/3 of what Mrs Tan bought. What was the total amount of sugar bought by Mrs. Tan and Mrs Lee.
(A) 1 2/5 kg (B) 1 5/6 kg (C) 2 kg (D) 3 1/2 kg
Solution :
Amount of sugar purchased by Mr. Tan = 1 1/2 kg
Amount of sugar purchased by Mrs. Lee = 1/3 kg
= 1 1/2 + 1/3
= 1 + 1/2 + 1/3
= 1 5/6 kg
So, the total amount of sugar she has purchased is 1 5/6 kg.
Question 14 :
The sum of Mrs. Lim's age and his son's age is 80 years now. Mrs Lim was 4 times old as her son 5 years ago. How old was Mrs. Lim's son 5 years ago.
Solution :
Let L be Lim's age and S be his son's age.
L + S = 80
5 years ago, their ages are
L - 5 and S - 5
L - 5 = 4(S - 5)
L - 5 = 4S - 20
L - 4S = -20 + 5
L - 4S = -15
80 - S - 4S = - 15
80 - 5S = -15
95 = 5S
S = 95/5
S = 19
S - 5 ==> 19 - 5 ==> 14 years.
