There are 800 soldiers in an army camp. There is enough provisions for them
for 60 days. If 400 more soldiers join the camp, for how many days will
the provisions last?

Solution:

Let "x" be the required number of days

Number of teachers                    Number of days

800                                            60

1200 (800 + 400)                             x

Since number of soldiers is increasing then number of days decrease because of having same quantity of provision for both case. This is in inverse variation.

800 x 60  = 1200 x x

X = (800 x 60)/1200

x = 48000/1200

x = 40 days

(4) 15 days

A wheel makes 48 revolutions in 3 seconds. How many revolutions does it
make in 30 seconds?

Solution:

Let "x" be the number of revolutions in 30 seconds

Here time is increasing. So number of revolutions also increase. It is in direct variation.

48 x 30  = 3 x x

X = (48 x 30)/3

x = 1440/3

x = 480 revolutions

A film processor can develop 100 negatives in 5 minutes. How many
minutes will it take to develop 1200 negatives?

Solution:

Let "x" be the number of minutes to develop 1200 negatives

Here the number of negatives is increasing so the number of minutes will also increase. It is in direct variation.

1000 x x  = 5 x 1200

X = (5 x 1200)/1000

x = 6000/1000
