Solving Word Problems with Rational Numbers for Grade 8 :
Here we are going to see some example problems of solving word problems with rational numbers.
Question 1 :
Subbu spends 1/3 of his monthly earnings on rent, 2/5 on food and 1/10 on monthly usuals. What fractional part of his earnings is left with him for other expenses?
Amount spent for rent = 1/3
Amount spent for food = 2/5
Amount spent for monthly usual = 1/10
Required amount left over = 1 - [(1/3) + (2/5) + (1/10)]
L.C.M (3, 5, 10) = 30
= 1 - [(10+12+3)/30]
= 1 - (25/30)
Question 2 :
In a constituency, 19/25 of the voters had voted for candidate A whereas 7/50 had voted for candidate B. Find the rational number of the voters who had voted for others.
Part of voters had voted for candidate A = 19/25
Part of voters had voted for candidate B = 7/50
Part of voters voted for others = 1 - [(19/25) + (7/50)]
L.C. M (25, 50) = 50
= 1 - [(38 + 7)/50]
= 1 - (45/50)
Question 3 :
If 3/4 of a box of apples weighs 3 kg and 225 gm, how much does a full box of apples weigh?
1 kg = 1000 g
3 kg = 3000
Therefore, 3000g + 225g = 3225 g
Finding the weight :-
3/4 of box weighs = 3225g
1/4 of box weighs = 3225/3 = 1075
Weight of box = 3225 + 1075 = 4300
Hence, required answer is 4 kg 300 g
Question 4 :
Mangalam buys a water jug of capacity 3 4/5 litres. If she buys another jug which is 2 2/3 times as large as the smaller jug, how many litres can the larger one hold?
Capacity of jug = 3 4/5 liters = 19/5
Now the volume of the second jug = 2 2/3 times of the first jug
So, the volume or capacity of the second jug( larger jug)
= (19/5) ⋅ (8/3)
= 10 2/5 liters
