## Methods of simplifying fractions

We have two methods to simplify a fraction.

By using this method we can easily simplify any large fractions. Ladder method can be done using the below steps.

Step 1:

Write the numerator and denominator in single line and draw the L shape.

Step 2:

Divide them by common factors as much as possible. If two numbers are not divisible by any common number then we have to leave it as it is.

Step 3:

The pair of numbers which is at the last step is the simplified form of the given original fraction.

## Simplifying Fractions Using Cancellation

• If the numerator and denominator ends up with 0,2,4,6,8 . Then we can decide that the whole number is divisible by 2.
• If the numerator and denominators ends up with 0 or 5. Then we can decide the whole number is divisible by 5.
• If the sum of digits in the numerator and the sum of digits in the denominator is divisible by 3. Then we can decide the whole number will become divisible by 3.

Problem 1:

Simplify 16/24 in simplest form

Solution:

In the above the fraction the numerator ends up with 6 and the denominator ends up with 4.So we can simply numerator and the denominator using 2 times table.

8 and 12 both are even numbers it can be divisible by 2.

again simplifying using 2 times table,we get

So the simplified form of the fraction 16/24 is 2/3.

Problem 2:

Simplify 15/18 in simplest form

Solution:

The numerator ends up with 5,but the denominator ends up with 8. So it is not possible to simplify this fraction using 2 times table.

Now let us check whether it is divisible by 3 or not. The sum of digits in the numerator is 6 and the sum of digits in the denominator is 9.Both are divisible by 3. So let us simplify the above fraction using 3 times table.

So the simplified form of the fraction 15/18 is 5/6.

The numerator ends up with 0 and the denominators ends up with 8.So we can simplify this using 2 times table initially.
