Let p (x) = x³ + x² + x - 14

x = 1

p (1) = (1)³ + (1)² + (1) - 14

= 1 + 1 + 1 - 14

= 3 - 14

= -11

≠ 0

So we can decide (x - 1) is not a factor.

x = -1

p (-1) = (-1)³ + (-1)² + (-1) - 14

= - 1 + 1 - 1 - 14

= - 16 + 1

= -15

So we can decide (x + 1) is not a factor.

x = 2

p (2) = (2)³ + (2)² + (2) - 14

= 8 + 4 + 2 - 14

= 14 - 14

= 0

So we can decide (x - 2) is a factor. To find other two factors we have to use synthetic division.
