20. Division means _________ sharing or ______ grouping.

21. The number to be divided is called _______

22. The answer to division problem is called ________

23. Any number divided by itself gives ________ as quotient

24. Any number divided by 1 gives ______ as quotient.

25. We cannot divide any number by _______

1. Answer :

He uses addition to split $240 into four equal parts. But always this is not possible.

Because, when we have huge quantity and want to split it into many equal parts, we can not use this method. In that kind of situation, we have to use division.

Let us see, how to use division to find the share of each son.

That is,

240 ÷ 4 or 240/4

To know the result of the above division, we are going to use multiplication.

That is,

The result of the above division is equal to, "How many times of the denominator is equal to the numerator ?"

More clearly, how many times 4 goes into 240 ?

60 times of the denominator 4 is equal the numerator 240.

Then, 240 ÷ 4 = 240/4 = 60.

Hence, each son will receive $60.

2. Answer :

15 ÷ 5 = 15/5 = 3

and

÷ 15 = 5/15 = 1/3

Therefore, 15 ÷ 5 ≠ ÷ 15.

From the above working, we observe that division is not commutative.

Hence, commutative property does not hold for division.

3. Answer :

12 ÷ (6 ÷ 2) = 12 ÷ 3 = 4

and

(12 ÷ 6) ÷ 2 = 2 ÷ 2 = 1

Therefore, 12 ÷ (6 ÷ 2) ≠ (12 ÷ 6) ÷ 2.

From the above working, we observe that division is not associative.

Hence, associative property does not hold for division.

4. Answer :

÷ 0, 100 ÷ 0, a ÷ 0

5/0 = Undefined

100/0 = Undefined

a/0 = Undefined

Division of any number (except 0) by zero is meaningless.

Because division by zero is not defined.

5. Answer :

÷ 1, 100 ÷ 1, 0 ÷ 1

5 ÷ 1 = 5/1 = 5

100 ÷ 1 = 100/1 = 100

0 ÷ 1 = 0/1 = 0

This shows that dividing any number by 1 is equal to that number.

In general, for any real number "a" we have

a ÷ 1 = a/1 = a

6. Answer :

250 / 50, (-144) / (-12), (-120) / 20, 100 / (-25)

250/50 = 5 (Positive)

(-144)/(-12) = 12 (Positive)

(-120)/20 = -6 (Negative)

100/(-25) = -4 (Negative)

From the above working, we can come to know the following facts,

positive number/positive number = positive number

negative number/negative number = positive number

negative number/positive number = negative number

positive number/negative number = negative number

7. In division problem, the number which is divided is called dividend.

8. 0 ÷ 25 = 0

9. Division is a process of repeated subtraction

10. 30 ÷ 30 = 1

11. 25 ÷ 4

Dividing 25 by 4, we get 6 as quotient and 1 as remainder.

12. 45 ÷ 0 = 0

13. Division is a inverse process of multiplication

14. 36 ÷ 36 = 1

15. 0 ÷ 16 = 0

16. 43 ÷ 1 = 43

17.  2÷ 4

23 = 4 x 5 + 3

23 = divident, 4 = divisor, 5 = quotient and 3 = remainder.

18. 57 ÷ 8 =

57 = 5 x 10 + 7

57 = divident, 8 = divisor, 5 = quotient and 7 = remainder.

19. (2 tens + 7 ones) ÷ 5 =  ______

= 2 x 10 + 7 x 1

= 20 + 7

= 27

27 ÷ 5 = 2 x 10 + 7

27 = divident, 5 = divisor, 2 = quotient and 7 = remainder.

20. Division means equal sharing or equal grouping.

21. The number to be divided is called divident

22. The answer to division problem is called quotient

23. Any number divided by itself gives 1 as quotient

24. Any number divided by 1 gives the same number as quotient.

25. We cannot divide any number by 0.
