WRITING DIVISION AS A FRACTION

Division is a process in which we calculate how many times a certain value will fit into another value. This process is the opposite of multiplication. Another method of writing division calculations is to use fractions.

In a fraction, the top number, or numerator, is divided by the bottom number, or denominator.

To understand this, let us consider the following example.

Alicia and her friends Brittany, Kenji, and Ellis are going  to share a pizza.

Question :

How much pizza will each of them get, if they divide one complete full pizza equally among them ?

Answer :

Since this division takes place for four people, we have to divide one pizza in to four equal parts.

Out of these four parts, each one will get one part.

That is, each of them will get 1/4 of a pizza.

More clearly,

1 ÷ 4 = 1/4

Hence, the division 1 ÷ 4 can be written as a fraction 1/4.

Example 1 :

3 ÷ 4 can be written 3/4 . How are the dividend and divisor of a division expression related to the parts of a fraction ?

Answer :

Always dividend is related to numerator of the fraction and divisor is related to denominator of the fraction.

In the division 3 ÷ 4, 3 is dividend and 4 is divisor.

Hence, the dividend 3 is related to the numerator 3 of the fraction and the divisor 4 is related to the denominator 4 of the fraction.

Example 2 :

How could we write the division as a fraction if 5 people shared 2 pizzas ?

Answer :

Fromm the given information, it is clear that 2 pizzas are going to be divided among 5 people.

So, the dividend is 2 and the divisor is 5.

Always dividend is related to numerator of the fraction and divisor is related to denominator of the fraction.

Therefore, the division 2 ÷ 5 can be represented as a fraction 2/5.

Example 3 :

Jason and his 2 roommates share the cost of the electric bill evenly. If the electric bill is $104, write a fraction which represents the share of each of them.

Answer :

Fromm the given information, it is clear that $104 is going to be divided among 3 people (Jason and  his 2 room mates).

So, the dividend is 104 and the divisor is 3.

Always dividend is related to numerator of the fraction and divisor is related to denominator of the fraction.

Then, the division 104 ÷ 3 can be represented as a fraction 104/3.

Hence, the fraction which represents the share of each of them is $104/3.
