WHAT ARE LIKE FRACTIONS

Like fractions are the fractions that have the same denominator.

Example :

The picture below practically illustrates like fractions.

Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions

When we add/subtract like fractions, we have to the denominator once and add/subtract the numerators. In other words, take the denominator in common and add/subtract the numerators.

Example 1 :

Evaluate :

1/5 + 2/5

Solution :

1/5 + 2/5

The above two fractions have the same denominator. So, they are like fractions.

To add the above two fractions, take the de nominator 5 once and add the numerators.

= (1 + 2)/5

= 3/5

Example 2 :

Evaluate :

5/7 - 2/7

Solution :

= 5/7 - 2/7

The above two fractions have the same denominator. So, they are like fractions.

To subtract the above two fractions, take the denominator 7 once and subtract the second numerator 2 from the first numerator 5.

= (5 - 2)/7

= 3/5

Example 3 :

Evaluate :

1/2 + 7/2 - 3/2

Solution :

= 1/2 + 7/2 - 3/2

The above two fractions have the same denominator. So, they are like fractions.

To evaluator the above expression, take the denominator 2 once and combine the numerators.

= (1 + 7 - 3)/2

= 5/2
