Question 9:

A flag staff stands on the top of 6 m high tower. From a point on the floor the angle of elevation of the top of the flag staff is 60 degree and from the same point the angle of elevation of the top of the tower is 45 degree. Find the height of the flag staff.

here BC represents height of the building , DC represents the distance between tower and point of observation.

In the right triangle BCD the side which is opposite to angle is known as opposite side(BC),the side which is opposite to 90 degree is called hypotenuse side(BD) and remaining side is called adjacent side (CD).

In the right triangle ACD the side which is opposite to angle is known as opposite side(AC),the side which is opposite to 90 degree is called hypotenuse side(AD) and remaining side is called adjacent side (CD).

Now we need to find the height of flag staff(AB)

tan θ = Opposite side/Adjacent side

Let AB = h

In ∆ BCD

tan 45 = BC/CD

1 = 6/CD

CD = 6  ----- (1)

In ∆ ACD

tan 60 = AC/CD

    √3 = (h + 6)/CD

   CD = (h+6)/√3  ----- (2)

(1)  = (2)

6 = (h+6)/√3

6√3 = h + 6

6√3 - 6 = h

6(√3 - 1)  = h

6 (1.732 - 1) = h

       h = 6 (0.732)

       h  = 4.392

       AB = 4.392 m

(1) The angle of elevation of the top of the building at a distance of 50m from its foot on a horizontal plane is found to be 60 degree. Find the height of the building.
