SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING SUBTRACTION

Question 1 :

I have 35 jelly beans. Then i eat 12. How many are left ?

Solution :

Number of jelly beans i have  =  35

Number of jelly beans i eat  =  12

Number of jelly beans left  =  35-12

  =  13

Question 2 :

Two numbers add up to 30. One of the number is 18. What is the other number ?

Solution :

Sum of two numbers  =  30

One of the number  =  18

The other number  =  30 - 18

  =  12

So, the other number is 12.

Question 3 :

A piece of wood of 60 inches long. A section 28 inches long is cut off. How long is the remaining piece of wood ?

Solution :

Length of wood  =  60 inches

Length of wood cut off  =  28

Remaining piece of wood  =  60 - 28

  =  32

So, length of remaining piece of wood is 32 inches.

Question 4 :

Rebecca read 213 pages of a book on Saturday. On Sunday she read some more pages of the book. If Rebecca read 416 pages in all, how many pages did she read on Sunday ?

Solution :

Number of pages she read on Saturday  =  213

Number of pages she read in all  =  416

213 + Number of pages she read in Sunday  =  416

Number of pages she read in Sunday  =  416 - 213

  =  203

Number of pages she read on Sunday is 203.

Question 5 :

Steve drove 158 miles on Saturday. On Sunday he drove 223 miles. How many miles did he drive in all on Saturday and Sunday.

Solution :

Number of miles he drove on Saturday  =  158 miles

Number of miles he drove on Sunday  =  223

Total number of miles he drive in Saturday and Sunday 

  =  158 + 223 

  =  381

Question 6 :

Kevin subtracts 149 from 256. He says the difference is 113. Is he correct?

Solution :

256 - 149  =  107

The difference is 107, but he says the difference is 113.

So, he is incorrect.

Question 7 :

The museum displays some butterflies in Room A and 203 butterflies in Room B. If the meseum displays 445 butterflies in all, how many does it display in Room A ?

Solution :

Number of butterflies in room A + room B  =  445

Number of butterflies in room A + 203  =  445

=  445-203

=  242

So, the number of butterflies in room A is 242.
