SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING SUBTRACTION

Question 1 :

I have 35 jelly beans. Then i eat 12. How many are left ?

Solution :

Number of jelly beans i have  =  35

Number of jelly beans i eat  =  12

Number of jelly beans left  =  35-12

  =  13

Question 2 :

Two numbers add up to 30. One of the number is 18. What is the other number ?

Solution :

Sum of two numbers  =  30

One of the number  =  18

The other number  =  30 - 18

  =  12

So, the other number is 12.

Question 3 :

A piece of wood of 60 inches long. A section 28 inches long is cut off. How long is the remaining piece of wood ?

Solution :

Length of wood  =  60 inches

Length of wood cut off  =  28

Remaining piece of wood  =  60 - 28

  =  32

So, length of remaining piece of wood is 32 inches.

Question 4 :

Rebecca read 213 pages of a book on Saturday. On Sunday she read some more pages of the book. If Rebecca read 416 pages in all, how many pages did she read on Sunday ?

Solution :

Number of pages she read on Saturday  =  213

Number of pages she read in all  =  416

213 + Number of pages she read in Sunday  =  416

Number of pages she read in Sunday  =  416 - 213

  =  203

Number of pages she read on Sunday is 203.

Question 5 :

Steve drove 158 miles on Saturday. On Sunday he drove 223 miles. How many miles did he drive in all on Saturday and Sunday.

Solution :

Number of miles he drove on Saturday  =  158 miles

Number of miles he drove on Sunday  =  223

Total number of miles he drive in Saturday and Sunday

  =  158 + 223

  =  381

Question 6 :

Kevin subtracts 149 from 256. He says the difference is 113. Is he correct?

Solution :

256 - 149  =  107

The difference is 107, but he says the difference is 113.

So, he is incorrect.

Question 7 :

The museum displays some butterflies in Room A and 203 butterflies in Room B. If the meseum displays 445 butterflies in all, how many does it display in Room A ?

Solution :

Number of butterflies in room A + room B  =  445

Number of butterflies in room A + 203  =  445

=  445-203

=  242

So, the number of butterflies in room A is 242.

Question 8:

Alysia stands some scales with a 15 kg dumbbell in each hand. If the scales read 92 kg, what does she weigh ?

Solution :

In her each hand, she has 15 kg dumbbell. Weight of dumbbell she has in her hands = 15 + 15

= 30 kg

In the scale, it says her weight as 92 kg

Reading in the scale

= weight of a person + weight of the objects that they have

92 = her weight + 30

92 - 30 = her weight=

62 kg

So, her weight is 62 kg.

Question 9:

My bank account balance was $1080. I withdrew amounts of $427 and $173. I then banked my pay cheque of $769. What is my bank balance now ?

Solution :

Balance amount = $1080

Amount i withdrew = (427 + 173)

= 600

Amount i banked after the withdrawal = $769

Balance now = 1080 - 600 + 769

= 1849 - 600

= 1249

Question 10 :

The Burj Khalifa building in the United Arab Emirates is 828 m, whereas Taipei 101 in Taiwan is 509 m tall. How much taller is Burj Khalifa than Taipei ?

Solution :

Height of Burj Khalifa = 828 m

Height of Taipei 101 = 509 m

Difference between the heights = 828 - 509

= 319 m

Question 11 :

In a  equestrian event Marcus came first, winning $2300, Megan came second, winning $1250.

a) What is the difference between the prizes ?

b)  If their scores had been equal, they would have shared the total prize money for the first and second. How much would they have been received ?

Solution :

a) Amount won by Marcus = $2300

Amount won by Megan = $1250

Difference between the winning amount = 2300 - 1250

= $1050

b)  Total amount of winning = 2300 + 1250

= 3550

Should be divided into two equal parts, then

= 3550/2

= 1775

So, each will receive $1775.

Question 12 :

Solve the following by working backwards.

a) I think of a number, triple it, then add 4. If the result is 28. Find the number.

b)  When twice a certain number is subtracted with 21, the result is 9. Find the number.

Solution :

From the result, we have to work on backwards.

Result = 28

Given that, add 4. Then working backwards, we have to subtract 4.

= 28 - 4

= 24

Given that triple it, then working backwards. We have to divide by 3.

= 24 / 3

= 8

So, the number that i think in the given situation is 8.

b)  Result = 9

Given that subtracted with  21. When we work backwards, we have to add 21

= 21 + 9

= 30

Given that, twice a number. Then we have to divide the number by 2.

= 30/2

= 15
