Here we are going to see how to solve equations with algebra tiles.

What are algebra tiles ?

Algebra tiles are square and rectangle-shaped tiles that represent numbers and variables.  It helps us to see just what quantities we are working with.

Each square tile stands for the number one. If we have two tiles, then we have the number two. If our numbers are negative, then our square tiles can be a different color to show the difference.

The rectangle tiles stand for variable. If we have one x, then we have one rectangle tile. If we have 2x, then we will have two rectangle tiles.

## Tiles used to model the given equation

Example 1 :

Solve the following equation using algebra tiles

x + 4  =  -6

Solution :

First let us model the above equation using algebra tiles.

For that we need to arrange one green rectangle tile, four yellow square tiles in the left side and six red square tiles in the right side.

Modeling the above equation :

In order to isolate one green rectangle tile on the left side, we need to use four red square tiles on both sides.

In the left side, we have only one rectangle green tile and in right side, we have ten square red tiles.

Hence the value of x is -10.

Example 2 :

Solve the following equation using algebra tiles

x - 4  =  -8

Solution :

First let us model the above equation using algebra tiles.

For that we need to arrange one green rectangle tile, four red square tiles in the left side and eight red square tiles in the right side.

Modeling the above equation :

In order to isolate one green rectangle tile on the left side, we need to use four yellow square tiles on both sides.

In the left side, we have only one rectangle green tile and in right side, we have four square red tiles.

Hence the value of x is -4.

Example 3 :

Solve the following equation using algebra tiles

-2x + 4  =  6

Solution :

First let us model the above equation using algebra tiles.

For that we need to arrange two red rectangle tiles, four yellow square tiles in the left side and six yellow square tiles in the right side.

Modeling the above equation :

In order to remove yellow square tiles on the left side, we need to use four red square tiles on both sides

The value of -x is 1.

Hence the value of x is -1

Example 4 :

Solve the following equation using algebra tiles

x - 5  =  3

Solution :

First let us model the above equation using algebra tiles.

For that we need to arrange green rectangle tile, five red square tiles in the left side and three yellow square tiles in the right side.

Modeling the above equation :

In order to remove yellow square tiles on the left side, we need to use four red square tiles on both sides

In the left side, we have only one rectangle green tile and in right side, we have ten square red tiles.

Hence the value of x is 10.
