Detailed Answer Key

1. Answer :

=  12% of 40

Convert the percent to decimal.

=  0.12 ⋅ 40

Multiply 0.15 and 70.

=  4.8

2. Answer :

First round $68.50 to $70 and 8.5% to 8%.

8% of 70  =  (8%)(70)

Convert the percent to decimal.

=  0.08 ⋅ 70

=  5.60

The sales tax is about $6.

3. Answer :

Total amount of money :

=  Bill for Food + Tip

=  70 + 15% of 70

Convert the percent to decimal.

=  70 + 0.15 ⋅ 70

Multiply 0.15 and 70.

=  70 + 10.5

=  80.5

Mr. David should pay $80.50.

4. Answer :

Price after sales tax :

=  Original price + Sales tax

=  30 + 6% of 30

Convert the percent to decimal.

=  30 + 0.06 ⋅ 30

Multiply 0.06 and 30.

=  30 + 1.8

=  31.8

The price after the sales tax is $31.80.

5. Answer :

Discount :

=  25% of 50

=  (25%)(50)

Convert the percent to a decimal.

=  0.25 ⋅ 50

Multiply 0.25 and 50.

=  12.50

The discount is $12.50.

Sale price of the dress can be found by subtracting the discount from the marked price.

Price after after discount :

=  Marked price - Discount

=  50 - 12.5

=  37.50

The sale price of the dress is $37.50.

6. Answer :

Discount :

=  30% of 20

=  (30%)(20)

Convert the percent to a decimal.

=  0.3  20

Multiply 0.3 and 20.

=  6

The discount is $6.

Price after after discount :

=  Marked price - Discount

=  20 - 6

=  14

The sale price is $14.

Price after after sales tax :

=  Sale price + Sales tax

=  14 + 6% of 14

=  14 + 0.06  14

=  14 + 0.84

=  14.84

Mr. Michael should pay $14.84.

7. Answer :

Discount :

=  15% of 2200

=  (15%)(2200)

Convert the percent to a decimal.

=  0.15  2200

Multiply 0.15 and 2200.

=  330

Cost after after discount :

=  Marked price - Discount

=  2200 - 330

=  1870

Cost after after sales tax :

=  Sale price + Sales tax

=  1870 + 7% of 1870

=  1870 + 0.07  1870

=  1870 + 130.9

=  2000.90

The final cost is $2000.90.

8. Answer :

Cost of meal after sales tax :

=  Cost of meal + Sales tax

=  80 + 5% of 80

=  80 + 0.05 ⋅ 80

=  80 + 4

=  84

Cost of meal after tip :

=  Cost of meal after sales tax + Tip

=  84 + 10% of 84

=  84 + 8.4

=  92.4

Total cost of meal for 4 people is $92.40.

(4 people = you + 3 friends)

Cost per person :

=  92.40/3

=  30.80

So, each person should pay $30.80.
