PRACTICE WORD PROBLEMS ON DECIMALS

Problem 1 :

Each side of a regular polygon is 5.2 m and its perimeter is 36.4 m. Find the number of sides of the polygon.

Solution :

Let x be the number of sides of a regular polygon.

Perimeter of polygon  =  36.4

Length of one side of polygon  =  5.2 m

5.2x  =  36.4

x  =  36.4/5.2

x  =  7

So, the number of sides of a polygon is 7.

Problem 2 :

Trisha took 3.25 minutes to complete the race and Rachel took 3.207 minutes to complete the race. Who won the race?

Solution :

Time taken by Trisha  =  3.25 minutes

Time taken by Rachel  =  3.207 minutes

By comparing hundredth places, 0 < 5.

Rachel is taking less time, so he will win the race.

Problem 3 :

The annual rainfall received by Albany is 278.2 cm and that by Rochester is 281.8 cm. Who received less rainfall ?

Solution :

Rain fall in Albany  =  278.2 cm

Rain fall in Rochester  =  281.8 cm

278 is less than 281.

So, Albany has received less rain fall.

Problem 4 :

Sharon’s height is 145.62 cm. She stands on a tool of height 10.50 cm. What is the combined height now ?

Solution :

Height of Sharon  =  145.62 cm

Height of the tool  =  10.50 cm

Combined height  =  145.62 + 10.50

  =  156.12

Problem 5 :

The milkman delivers 5.02 liter of milk to a house in the morning and 2.120 liter in the evening. What is the total quantity of milk delivered by the milkman ?

Solution :

Quantity of milk delivered in the morning  =  5.02 liter

Quantity of milk delivered in the evening  =  2.120 liter

Total quantity of milk delivered  =  5.02 + 2.120

  =  7.14 liters

Problem 6 :

Rebecca ‘s kite is flying at a height of 17.2 m and Shelly’s at a height of 21.5 m from the ground. Whose kite is flying high and by how much?

Solution :

Height of Rebecca ‘s kite  =  17.2 m

Height of Shelly's kite  =  21.5 m

21 is greater than 17. So, Shelly's kite is flying high.

Difference  =  21.5 - 17.2

  =  4.3 m

So, Shelly's kite is flying 4.3 m more than Rebecca's kite.

Problem 7 :

A car travels 367.80 km in 6 hours. How much distance will it travel in 1 hour?

Solution :

Distance covered by the car  =  367.80

Time taken  =  6 hours

Distance covered in 1 hour  =  367.80/6

  =  61.3 km

Problem 8 :

Ron jogged 2.2 km, Mike jogged 3.7 times more distance than Ron. Find the distance covered by Mike.

Solution :

Distance covered by Ron  =  2.2 km

Distance covered by Mike  =  3.7(2.2)

  =  8.14 km

So, distance covered by Mike is 8.14 km.
