PLOTTING POINTS ON A COORDINATE PLANE

Points to remember when plotting the given points in a coordinate plane :

• If the given point is in the form (+, +), then it will be located on the 1st quadrant

• If the given point is in the form (-, +), then it will be located on the 2nd quadrant

• If the given point is in the form (-, -), then it will be located on the 3rd quadrant

• If the given point is in the form (+, -), then it will be located on the 4th quadrant

• If the given point has the value 0 in x-coordinate, then it will be located on y-axis.

• If the given point has the value 0 in y-coordinate, then it will be located on x-axis.

Let us see some examples based on the above concept.

Example 1 :

Plot the point (-2, 2) on the coordinate plane.

Solution :

The given point is in the form (-, +), so it will located on 2nd quadrant.

Example 2 :

Plot the point (4, -2) on the coordinate plane.

Solution :

The given point is in the form (+, -), so it will located on 4th quadrant.

Example 3 :

Plot the point (-3, -4) on the coordinate plane.

Solution :

The given point is in the form (-, -), so it will located on 3rd quadrant.

Example 4 :

Write the ordered pair that describes a point 12 units down from and 7 units to the right of the origin.

Solution :

To write the required ordered pair, let us read the question once again.

12 units down  ==>  -12

7 units right  ==>  + 7

Hence, the required point is (-12, 7)

Example 5 :

Write the ordered pair for a point that is 9 units to the left of the origin and lies on the x-axis.

Solution :

To write the required ordered pair, let us read the question once again.

9 units to the left of the origin  ==>  -9

It lies on the x-axis. So, the value of y coordinate will be 0.

Hence, the required point is (-9, 0)

Example 6 :

The diagram at the right shows the positions of artifacts found on the ocean floor. Write the coordinates of the location for each object: coins, plate, goblet, and vase.

Solution :

Example 7 :

Plot the point (0, -1) on the coordinate plane.

Solution :

In the given point, the x-coordinate value is 0. So, the required point must be located on y- axis.

Example 8 :

Plot the point (5, 0) on the coordinate plane.

Solution :

In the given point, the x-coordinate value is 0. So, the required point must be located on y- axis.
