To solve percents of numbers word problems we need to follow the steps given below :

(i) Understand the given question.

(ii) Identify that what do we have to find out from the given question.

(iii) Use the formula.

**Example 1 :**

There are 250 students in a school. 55 students like basketball, 75 students like football, 63 students like throw ball, while the remaining like cricket. What is the percent of students who like (a) basket ball? (b) throw ball?

**Solution :**

Total number of students = 250

(a) Number of students who like basket ball = 55

55 out of 250 like basket ball which can be represented as 55/250

Percentage of students who like basket ball

= (55/250) x 100%

= 22%

(b) Number of students who like throw ball = 63

63 out of 250 like throw ball and that can be represented as 63/250

Percentage of students who like throw ball

= (63/250) x 100%

= (126/5)%

= 25.2%

22% like basket ball, 25.2% like throw ball.

**Example 2 :**

In a class of 35 students, 7 students were absent on a particular day. What percentage of the students were absent?

**Solution :**

Total number of students = 35

Number of students absent = 7

percentage of students absent

= (Number of students absent/total number of students) x 100

= (7/35) x 100

= (1/5) x 100

= 20%

Hence 20% of students were absent.

**Example 3 :**

Ram bought 36 mangoes. 5 mangoes were rotten. What is the percentage of the mangoes that were rotten?

**Solution :**

Total number of mangoes = 36

Number of rotten mangoes = 5

percentage of rotten mangoes = (5/36) x 100

= 13.89%

Hence 13.89% of mangoes were rotten out of 36 mangoes.

**Example 4 :**

In a class of 70, 60% are boys. Find the number of boys and girls.

**Solution :**

percentage of boys = 60%

percentage of girls = 40%

Total number of students = 70

Number of boys = 60% of 70

= (60/100) x 70

= 42

Number of girls = 40% of 70

= (40/100) x 70

= 28

**Example 5 :**

In 2010, the population of a town is 1,50,000. If it is increased by 10% in the next year, find the population in 2011.

**Solution :**

Population in 2010 = 150000

Increase in population = (10/100) x 150000

= 15000

Population in 2011 = 150000 + 15000

= 165000

**Example 6 :**

In a class of 50, 23 were girls and the rest were boys. What is the percentage of girls and the percentage of boys?

**Solution :**

Total number of students in the class = 50

Number of girls = 23

Percentage of girls

= (number of girls/total number of students) x 100

= (23/50) x 100

= 0.46 x 100

= 46%

Hence 46% of students are girls.

**Example 7 :**

Adam got 66 marks out of 75 in Math and 72 out of 80 in Science. In which subject did he score more?

**Solution :**

To find in which subject he score good marks, we need to the percentage of marks he scored in each subjects.

percentage of marks in math = (66/75) x 100

= 88%

percentage of marks in science = (72/80) x 100

= 90%

By comparing the percentage of marks scored in two subjects, Adam scored more marks in science.
