ORDERING INTEGERS WORKSHEET

1. Order the integers -4 and 4 from least to greatest.

2. Order the integers -1 and 1 from least to greatest.

3. In 2010, Sacramento, California, received 23 inches in annual precipitation. In 2011, the city received 17 inches in annual precipitation. In which year was there more precipitation ?

4. John recorded the following golf scores during his first week at a golf academy. Negative numbers represent scores below par, a standard score. In golf, a lower score beats a higher score.

Graph John’s scores on the number line, and then list the numbers in order from least to greatest.

5. Order the integers from least to greatest 2, -7, 9, 8, -4, 0, 11, -8.

6. The diagram shows the coldest recorded temperatures for several cities in Virginia.

a. Which city has the coldest recorded temperature? Graph each integer on a number line

b. Has a negative temperature ever been recorded on Wallops Island? Explain.

7.  The positions of four fish are shown.

a. Use red, blue, yellow, and green dots to graph the positions of the fi sh on a number line.

b. Explain how to use the number line from part (a) to order the positions from least to greatest.

8.  An archaeologist discovers two artifacts. Compare the positions of the artifacts.

9.  The freezing temperature of nitrogen is − 210°C and the freezing temperature of oxygen is − 223°C. Which has a lower freezing temperature?

10. Tell whether the statement is always, sometimes, or never true. Explain.

a)  A positive integer is greater than its opposite.

b) An integer is less than its opposite and greater than 0.

c) The median of a set of integers is negative.

11.  Four friends went scuba diving today. Ali dove 70 feet, Tim went down 50 feet, Carl dove 65 feet, and Brenda reached 48 feet below sea level. Write the 4 friends’ names in order from the person whose depth was closest to the surface to the person whose depth was the farthest from the surface.

1. Answer :

Let us locate the two integers -4 and 4 on a number line and mark them.

From the above number line, write the integers from left to right to list them in order from least to greatest.

Thus, we get

-4, 4

2. Answer :

Let us locate the two integers -1 and 1 on a number line and mark them.

From the above number line, write the integers from left to right to list them in order from least to greatest.

Thus, we get

-1, 1

3. Answer :

Locate the two integers 23 and 17 on a number line and mark them.

From the above number line, write the integers from left to right to list them in order from least to greatest.

Thus, we get

17, 23

Since 23 is to the right of 17 on the number line.

This means that 23 is greater than 17.

Hence, there was more precipitation in 2010.

4. Answer :

Step 1 :

Graph the scores on the number line.

Step 2 :

Read from left to right to list the scores in order from least to greatest.

The scores listed from least to greatest are

–5, –3, –2, –1, 0, 3, 4

5. Answer :

As we have done in the above problems, if we locate and mark the given integers on a number line, we get the following order from least to greatest.

–8, –7, –4, 0, 2, 8, 9, 11

6. Answer :

a) − 12 is the farthest to the left on the number line. So, Richmond has the coldest recorded temperature.

b)   The coldest recorded temperature on Wallops Island is 0°F, which is greater than every negative temperature. So, a negative temperature has never been recorded on Wallops Island.

7. Answer :

a)

order-of-operation-q2p1.png

b) Ordering from least to greatest is 4, 6, 8.

8. Answer :

  • The digging tool is at 38 feet deeper
  • The pot is at 44 feet deeper.

The pot is more deeper.

9. Answer :

The freezing temperature of nitrogen = - 210°C

the freezing temperature of oxygen = − 223°C

The freezing temperature of oxyzen is lower.

10. Answer :

a)  A positive integer is greater than its opposite.

Ture

b) An integer is less than its opposite and greater than 0.

When integer is positive, its opposite will be negative. Then, the integer will be greater than 0

When integer is negative, its opposite will be negative. Then, the integer will be less than 0.

So, the given statement is sometimes true.

c) The median of a set of integers is negative.

Median is the middle number. Then it is never true.

11. Answer :

  • The deepness reached by Ali = 70 feet
  • The deepness reached by Tim = 50 feet
  • The deepness reached by Carl = 65 feet
  • The deepness reached by Brenda = 48 feet

Arranging the height from greatest to least.

70, 65, 50, 48

Arranging the names from greater to least :

Ali, Carl, Brenda, Tim
