In this section, you will learn how to solve one step equations with rational coefficients using one of the four binary operations addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Problem 1 :

Solve for x :

x + 3.2  =  -8.5

Solution :

x + 3.2  =  -8.5

Subtract 3.2 from each side.

x  =  -11.7

Problem 2 :

Solve for x :

30  =  -0.5a

Solution :

30  =  -0.5a

Divide each side by (-0.5).

-60  =  a

Problem 3 :

Solve for a :

-2/3 + y  =  8

Solution :

-2/3 + y  =  8

Add 2/3 to each side.

y  =  8

Problem 4 :

Solve for p :

-p/3.5  =  9.2

Solution :

-p/3.5  =  9.2

Multiply each side by (-3.5).

p  =  -32.2

Problem 5 :

A painter works 37.5 hours one week. If he had worked 5 days, how many hours did he work on average per day ?

Solution :

Let x be the number of hours he worked per day.

Write an equation.

5x  =  37.5

Divide each side by 5.

x  =  7.5

So, the painter worked 7.5 hours on average per day.

Problem 6 :

When two times of a number is divided by 7, the result is 12. Find the number.

Solution :

Let x be the number of boxes.

Then,

2x/7  =  12

Multiply each side by 7/2.

x  =  42

So, the number is 42.
