NUMBERS AND THEIR TYPES

A number is a mathematical object used to count, measure, and label. The original examples are the natural numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and so forth.

Types of Numbers

Natural Numbers

Set of all numbers which is beginning with 1, 2,... is called as Natural numbers

This is the symbol of representing the set of natural numbers.

Whole Numbers

Set of all numbers which is beginning with 0, 1, 2, 3...is called as whole numbers

This is the symbol of representing the set of whole numbers.

Integers

Integers are set of all whole numbers and their opposites. We are using number line to denote integers....-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3....

This is the symbol of representing the set of integers.

Fractions

Fractions are numbers expressed as the ratio of two numbers, and are used mainly to express as a comparison between a part and a whole. …,-1, -¾, -½, -¼, 0, ¼, ½, ¾,1,…..

Decimals

In this type the numbers always containing point. If we multiply the decimal with 10, 100, 1000 or 10000 like that the decimal will move from right side. The decimal point is helping us to keep track of where the ‘ones’ place is. That is placed to the right of ones’ place. When we move right from the decimal point, each number place is divided by the number '10'.

..., -0.5, -0.25, 0, 0.25, 0.5, ...

Percentage

Percentage is the way of representing the numbers in terms of fraction of 100. We can split the word "PERCENT" as "PER + CENT". That means per hundred. Usually, in examination marks scored by the students is represented as percentage. That is, how many marks the student has scored out of 100.

25/100 = 25%

Rational Numbers

In our number system we are representing the rational number in the form of fraction like a/b.

1.5=3/2

This is the symbol of representing the set of rational numbers.

Irrational Numbers

numbers and their types

An irrational number is any real number which cannot be expressed as a simple fraction or rational number. π are √2 are examples of irrational numbers.

Real Numbers

All numbers including positive integers, negative integers, rational numbers, irrational numbers, are called real numbers.

This is the symbol of representing the set of real numbers.

Complex Numbers

Complex number is a combination of real and imaginary numbers. It is usually expressed in the form a + ib where a is the real number and b is the complex number.

This is the symbol of representing the set of complex numbers.

Basically there are three ways in which we use number. There are given two names to reflect their uses :

Cardinal number is the number that denotes quantity of something. It answers the question, How many. So it is also called as counting number. For example if we ask some one ,"how many friends do you have?". Then the person will reply you,"i have 5 friends". Like this we have lots of examples. For this purpose only we are using this cardinal numbers.

Ordinal numbers is a word used to describe the numerical position of objects.  If some students participated in a running race we can order them as first, second, third, and so on. First denotes the child who completed the race first. Second marks the child who came second and so on .Here you can find the links in which you can get the representation of each numbers and their uses.
