We can use the following tiles to model linear equations in algebra.

How to model and solve the given equations using algebra tiles ?

Step 1 :

First we have to model the given equation using the above tiles.

Step 2 :

Solve means finding the value of the variable. For that, we need to isolate the variable.

Note :

1. If it is required, equal number of same color tiles can be removed from each side.

2. If you want to remove some number of red color tiles from one side, the same number of yellow tiles have to be taken on the other side.

2. If you want to remove some number of yellow color tiles from one side, the same number of red tiles have to be taken on the other side.

Examples

Example 1 :

Model and solve the following equation using algebra tiles.

2x + 2  =  14

Solution :

Now use the above mentioned algebra tiles to model the equation on the mat.

To model the above equation, we need to use two green tiles, two yellow tiles on the left side and ten yellow tiles on the right side.

Remove two yellow tiles from each side of the mat.

Divide each side into 2 equal groups.

Result :

So, the solution is

x  =  6

Example 2 :

Model and solve the given equation using algebra tiles

2x + 2  =  6

Solution :

Now use the above mentioned algebra tiles to model the equation on the mat.

To model the above equation, we need to use two green tiles, two yellow tiles on the left side and six yellow tiles on the right side.

Remove two yellow tiles from each side of the mat.

Divide each side into 2 equal groups.

Result :

So, the solution is

x  =  2

Example 3 :

Model and solve the given equation using algebra tiles

x - 2  = 8

Solution :

Now use the above mentioned algebra tiles to model the equation on the mat.

To model the above equation, we need to use one green tile, two red tiles on the left side and eight yellow tiles on the right side.

To remove two red tiles on the left side, we need to add two yellow tiles on the right side.

So, the solution is

x  =  10
