Let us consider the following missing addend question.

3 + __ = 7

The above question tells us that some number is added to 3, the answer is 7.

What number should be added to 3 to get the answer 7 ?

The number can be found by trial and error.

If we add 1 to 3, we get 4.

If we add 2 to 3, we get 5.
