MATH PRACTICE WORKSHEETS FOR SAT IN ARITHMETIC

Question 1 :

Susie and Dennis are training for marathon. On Monday, they both run 3.2 miles. On Tuesday Susie runs 5  1/5 miles and Dennis runs 3.6 miles. On Wednesday, Susie runs 4.8 miles and Dennis runs 2  2/5 miles. During those 3 days, how many more miles does Susie run than Dennis ?

(A)  4.8   (B)  4.0  (C)  3.2  (D)  3.0  (E)  2.4

Solution :

Let us tabulate the given information.

Days

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Susie (in miles)

3.2

5  1/5

4.8

Dennis(in miles)

3.2

3.6

2  2/5

Number of miles that Susie had run  =  3.2 + 26/5 + 4.8

  =  3.2 + 5.2 + 4.8

  =  13.2 miles

Number of miles that Dennis had run  =  3.2 + 3.6 + 12/5

  =  3.2 + 3.6 + 2.4

  =  9.2 miles

Number of miles Susie had run than Dennis  =  13.2 - 9.2

  =  4.0

Hence Susie had run 4 miles greater than Dennis.

Question 2 :

Which number is a multiple of 60 ?

(A)  213  (B)  350  (C)  540  (D)  666  (E) 1060

Solution :

If we get 0 remainder by dividing a number by a particular number, then we can say that the given number is the multiple of that particular number.

Hence 540 is a multiple of 60.

Question 3 :

Two odd integers and one even integer are multiplied together. Which of the following could be their product ?

(A)  1.5  (B)  3  (C)  6  (D)  7.2  (E)  15

Solution :

Step 1 :

By multiplying an odd number by another odd number, we get odd number.

Step 2 :

By multiplying an odd by even, we get an even number.

So, the answer should be an even integer. In the options, we have two even integers 6 and 7.2.

Since 7.2 is decimal, we may neglate this. 6 is the answer.

Question 4 :

If the number 9, 899, 399 is increased by 2, 082, the result will be

(A)  9, 902, 481  (B)  9, 901, 481  (C)  9, 901, 471

  (D)  9, 891, 481  (E)  901, 481

Solution :

9, 899, 399 increased by 2082.

=  9, 899, 399 + 2082

9, 901, 481 is the answer.

Question 5 :

What is the sum of 5 consecutive integers if the middle one is 13 ?

(A)  55  (B)  60  (C)  65  (D)  70  (E)  75

Solution :

Since the middle term is 13, five consecutive odd numbers are 9, 11, 13, 15, 17.

  =  9 + 11 + 13 + 15 + 17

  =  65

Hence the answer is 65.

Question 6 :

4x4/2x2  =

(A)  2x2  (B)  2x3  (C)  2x4  (D)  4x2   (E)  4x3

Solution :

=  4x4/2x2

=  2x4-2

=  2x2

Question 7 :

-23 (1 - 2)3 + (-2)3  =

(A)  -12  (B)  -4  (C)  0  (D)  4  (E)  12

Solution :

  =  -23 (1 - 2)3 + (-2)3

  =  -8(-1)3 + (-8)

  =  -8 (-1) - 8

  =  8 - 8

  =  0

Hence the answer is 0.
