In this section, we will see some practice problems for 5th grade students.

Question 1 :

Four chocolate pieces can be kept in a wooden box. How many boxes of same size needed for 32 chocolate pieces?

(A) 5    (B) 8    (C) 4

Solution :

Number of chocolate pieces can be kept in one wooden box  =  4

Total number of chocolates  =  32

Required number of boxes  =  32/4

=  8 boxes

Question 2 :

Apple juice costs \$3.29 a gallon. What is the cost in dollars to fill a can which holds 33 gallons?

(A) 100.21     (B) 102.54     (C) 108.57

Solution :

Cost of one gallon  =  \$3.29

Cost of 33 gallons  =  33(3.29)

=  \$108.57

Question 3 :

John purchased 12 cotton shirts for \$144. How much did each shirt cost in dollars ?

(A) 12     (B) 15      (C) 25

Solution :

Cost of 12 shirts  =  144

Cost of 1 shirt  =  144/12

=  \$12

Question 4 :

(A) -3x    (B) 21 x    (C) 14 x

Solution :

=  9x + 12x

=  21x

Question 5 :

The sound of thunder needs five seconds to travel a mile. How far are you away from the thunder, if it takes 55 seconds to reach you?

(A) 15     (B) 11      (C) 10

Solution :

Time taken by the sound to travel 1 mile  =  5 seconds

required distance  =  55/5

=  11 miles

Question 6 :

Stella goes to the pet store and she buys a rabbit and a goldfish. She spends \$24.00 in total. The rabbit costs twice as much as the goldfish, how much does she pay for the Rabbit in dollars?

(A) 14    (B) 15     (C) 16

Solution :

Let x be the cost of goldfish

Then, 2x be the cost of rabbit.

x + 2x  =  24

3x  =  24

x  =  24/3

x  =  8

2x  =  2(8)  =  16

Hence the cost of rabbit is \$16.

Question 7 :

The reduced fraction of 0.82 is

(A) 26/57     (B) 15/18      (C) 41/50

Solution :

0.82  =  82/100

=  41/50

Hence the reduced form is 41/50.

Question 8 :

Jessy is earning \$2500 a month. She received a 4% pay raise. How much is she earning now in dollars?

(A) 2600     (B) 2400      (C) 3500

Solution :

Jessy's earning  =  \$2500

Raised salary  =  2500 + 4% of 2500

=  2500 + 100

=  2600

Hence her earning is 2600.

Question 9 :

Kevin is having a garden whose measurements are 30 feet by 40 feet. He wants to put a sidewalk around the garden that is 3 feet wide. What is the perimeter of outside sidewalk, in feet?

(A) 150     (B) 162      (C) 164

Solution :

Length of the garden  =  30 feet

Width of the garden  =  40 feet

Length along with wide  =  30 + 3 + 3  =  36 feet

Width along with wide  =  40 + 3 + 3  =  46 feet

perimeter of the side walk  =  2(36 + 46)

=  2(82)

=  164 feet

Question 10 :

There are 12 families like watching sports for every 100 families with T.V sets. In a city of 23,400 families who all have TV sets, how many families would like watching sports ?

(A) 2500     (B) 2808      (C) 1250

Solution :

Percent of people who would like to watch sports  =  12%

Total number of families  =  23400

Number of families who would like to watch sports

=  12% of 23400

=  0.12 (23400)

=  2808 After having gone through the stuff given above, we hope that the students would have practiced problems in the worksheet.
