# DIVISION WORD PROBLEMS

Problem 1 :

Brad’s class collected 320 cans of food. They boxed them in boxes of 40 cans each. How many boxes did they need ?

Solution :

To find the number of boxes needed, we should divide the the total number of cans by number of cans in each box.

=  320 / 40

=  8

So, they need 8 boxes.

Problem 2 :

Mr. Brown plowed 6 acres in 1 hour. At this rate, how long will it take him to plow 21 acres ?

Solution :

To find the time to plow 21 acres, we have to divide 21 acres by number of acres plowed in 1 hour.

=  21 / 6

=  3.5 hours

=  3 hours 30 minutes

So, it will take take 3 hours 30 minutes for Mr. Brown to plow 21 acres.

Problem 3 :

Lucy’s youth group raised \$1,569 for charity. They decided to split the money evenly among 3 charities. How much will each charity receive ?

Solution :

To split \$1,569 evenly among 3 charities, we should divide 1569 by 3.

=  1569 / 3

=  529

So, each Charity will receive \$529.

Problem 4 :

Susan traveled 285 miles in 5 hours. Find her speed in miles per hour.

Solution :

To find the speed in miles per hour, we have to find the distance traveled in one hour.

To find the distance traveled in one hour, divide the total distance traveled by time.

=  285 / 5

=  57

So, Susan's speed is 57 miles per hour.

Problem 5 :

A flight from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles took 5 hours and covered 3,060 miles. What was the plane’s average speed ?

Solution :

To find the plane's average speed, divide the distance traveled by time.

=  3060 / 5

=  612

So, the plane's average speed was 612 miles hour.

Problem 6 :

Raul’s bedroom is 288 inches long. How many yards long is the bedroom ?

Solution :

1 yard  =  36 inches

To convert 288 inches to yards, divide 288 by 36.

=  288 / 36

=   8 yards

So, Raul's bedroom is 8 yards long.

Problem 7 :

If 8.5 lbs of sea food costs \$157.25, find the cost of 1 lb of sea food.

Solution :

Given : Cost of 8.5 lbs is \$157.25.

Then, cost of 1 lb is

=  157.25 / 8.5

=  18.50

So, the cost of 1 lb of sea food is \$18.50.

Problem 8 :

If Jeff burns 1750 calories in 3.5 hours of bicycling, how many calories does he burn in per hour ?

Solution :

Given : Jeff burns 1750 calories in 3.5 hours.

To find the amount of calories he burns per hour, we should divide 1750 calories by 3.5.

=  1750 / 3.5

=  500

So, Jeff burns 500 calories per hour.
