Detailed Answer Key

Problem 1 :

Brad’s class collected 480 cans of food. They boxed them in boxes of 30 cans each. How many boxes did they need ?

Solution :

To find the number of boxes needed, we should divide the the total number of cans by number of cans in each box.

=  480 / 30

=  16

So, they need 16 boxes.

Problem 2 :

Mr. Brown plowed 8 acres in 1 hour. At this rate, how long will it take him to plow 50 acres ?

Solution :

To find the time to plow 50 acres, we have to divide 50 acres by number of acres plowed in 1 hour.

=  50 / 8

=  6.25 hours

=  6 hours 15 minutes

So, it will take take 6 hours 15 minutes for Mr. Brown to plow 50 acres.

Problem 3 :

A group of students raised $2,400 for charity. They decided to split the money evenly among 8 charities. How much will each charity receive ?

Solution :

To split $2,400 evenly among 8 charities, we should divide 2400 by 8.

=  2400 / 8

=  300

So, each Charity will receive $300.

Problem 4 :

Susan traveled 319 miles in 5 hours 30 minutes. Find her speed in miles per hour.

Solution :

To find the speed in miles per hour, we have to find the distance traveled in one hour.

To find the distance traveled in one hour, divide the total distance traveled by time.

=  319 / (5 hours 30 minutes)

=  319 / 5.5

=  58

So, Susan's speed is 58 miles per hour.

Problem 5 :

A flight from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles took 5 hours and covered 3,060 miles. What was the plane’s average speed ?

Solution :

To find the plane's average speed, divide the distance traveled by time.

=  3060 / 5

=  612

So, the plane's average speed was 612 miles hour.

Problem 6 :

Raul’s bedroom is 288 inches long. How many yards long is the bedroom ?

Solution :

1 yard  =  36 inches

To convert 288 inches to yards, divide 288 by 36.

=  288 / 36

=   8 yards

So, Raul's bedroom is 8 yards long.

Problem 7 :

If 8.5 lbs of sea food costs $157.25, find the cost of 1 lb of sea food.

Solution :

Given : Cost of 8.5 lbs is $157.25.

Then, cost of 1 lb is

=  157.25 / 8.5

=  18.50

So, the cost of 1 lb of sea food is $18.50.

Problem 8 :

The total ticket sales for a soccer game were $1,260 ; 210 tickets were purchased. If all the tickets are the same price, what was the cost of a ticket ?

Solution :

Given : Cost of 210 tickets was $1,260.

To find the cost of each ticket, divide 1260 by 210.

=  1260 / 210

=  6

So, the cost of a ticket was $6.
