Create a two way table worksheet :
Worksheet given in this section is much useful to the students who would like to practice problems on two-way table which shows the frequencies of data that is categorized in two ways. The rows indicate one categorization and the columns indicate another.
A survey was made among 150 town residents found that 40% own a car. Of those who own a car, 75% shop at the farmer’s market. Of those who do not own a car, 25% shop at the farmer’s market. Create a two way table for the above data.
A survey was made among 150 town residents found that 40% own a car. Of those who own a car, 75% shop at the farmer’s market. Of those who do not own a car, 25% shop at the farmer’s market. Create a two way table for the above data.
Solution :
Step 1 :
Find the number of residents who own a car.
40% of the residents who own a car.
So, no. of residents who own a car is
= 40% ⋅ 150
= 0.4 ⋅ 150
= 60
Step 2 :
Find the number of residents who do own a car.
No. of residents who do not own a car is
= Total no. of residents - No. of residents who own a car
= 150 - 60
= 90
Step 3 :
Find the number of residents who own a car, shop at the farmer's market.
75% of the residents who own a car, shop at the farmer's market.
So, no. of residents who own a car, shop at the farmer's market is
= 75% ⋅ 60
= 0.75 ⋅ 60
= 45
Step 4 :
Find the number of residents who own a car, do not shop at the farmer's market.
No. of residents who own a car, do not shop at the farmer's market is
= 60 - 45
= 15
Step 5 :
Find the number of residents who do not own a car, shop at the farmer's market.
25% of the residents who do not own a car, shop at the farmer's market.
So, no. of residents who do not own a car, shop at the farmer's market is
= 25% ⋅ 90
= 0.25 ⋅ 90
= 22.5 ≈ 23
Step 6 :
Find the number of residents who do not own a car, do not shop at the farmer's market.
No. of residents who do not own a car, do not shop at the farmer's market is
= 90 - 23
= 67
Step 7 :
Make a table by taking the categories "Owning a car" and "Not owning a car" in rows and the categories "Shopping at farmer's market" and "Not shopping at farmer's market" in columns as given below.
Step 8 :
Fill the empty cells of the above table using the results received from step 1 to step 7.
