Detailed Answer Key

1. Answer :

We can use a bar diagram to solve this problem. Each part represents 1 inch.

The total length of the above bar diagram is 11 inches and its has been divided into 11 equal parts, each part represents 1 inch

From the above table, in length section of customary to metric conversion, we get

1 inch  ≃  2.54 centimeters

There are eleven 2.54 centimeters in the above bar diagram.

Then, we have

11 inches  =  11 x 2.54 centimeters

11 inches  =  27.94 centimeters

Another Method :

Another way to solve this problem is to write a proportion and find equivalent ratios.

In this method also, we get the same answer.

That is,

11 inches  =  27.94 centimeters

2. Answer :

We know the formula for speed.

That is,

Speed  =  Distance / Time

Speed  =  160 miles / 2 hours

Speed  =  80 miles per hour

To find the speed in kilometer per hour, we have to convert 80 miles into kilometers.

From the above table, in length section of customary to metric conversion, we get

1 miles  ≃  1.61 kilometers

So, we have

80 miles  =  80 x 1.61 kilometers

80 miles  =  128.8 kilometers (Approximately)

3. Answer :

To find the height of the oak tree in feet, we have to convert 2.5 meters into feet.

From the above table, in length section of metric to customary conversion, we get

So, we have

1 meter   3.28 feet

2.5 meters  =  2.5 x 3.28 feet

2.5 meters  =  8.2 feet (Approximately)

4. Answer :

To find the weight of the person in pounds, we have to convert 60 kilograms into pounds.

From the above table, in weight/mass section of metric to customary conversion, we get

So, we have

1 kilogram   2.20 pounds

60 kilograms  =  60 x 2.20 pounds

60 kilograms  =  132 pounds (Approximately)

5. Answer :

Height of Jack = 1.36 m

Height of Ian = 1.36 m + 5 cm

1 m = 100 cm

= 1.36 x 100 cm

= 136 cm

= 136 + 5

= 141 cm

= 141/100

= 1.41 m

So, height of Ian = 1.41 m

6. Answer :

Distance covered by Mary = 600 m

Number of days taken = 7

Distance covered in all 7 days = 7(600)

= 4200 m

1000 m = 1 km

= 4200/1000

= 4.2 km

So, the distance covered is 4.2 km.

7. Answer :

Quantity of flour needed = 0.8 kg

Quantity of flour Karl has = 72 grams

1 kg = 1000 gram

0.8 kg = 0.8(1000)

= 800 gram

Difference = 800 - 72

= 728 grams

So, she needs 728 grams of flour.

8. Answer :

Quantity of juice they have purchased = 3 liter

Quantity that the boy drinks = 650 ml

1000 ml = 1 liter

3 liter = 3 x 1000

= 3000 ml

Difference = 3000 - 650

= 2350 ml

= 2350 /1000

= 2.35 liters

So, 2.350 liters of juice is left over.

9. Answer :

Weight of Lucky =  5.4 kilograms

Weight of Pepe = 5.4 kkg - 800 grams

Converting into the same unit.

1 kg = 1000 grams

800 / 1000

= 0.8 kg

Finding the difference, we get

= 5.4 - 0.8

= 4.6 kg

So, weight of Pepe is 4.6 kg.

9. Answer :

To solve this problem, we first need to understand the number of coins in £80 worth of 2p coins. In 1 pound, there are 50 2p coins

(since 1p = £0.01, so 50 x £0.02 = £1).

Thus, in £80, we have:

= 50 x 80

= 4,000 coins.

Now, we need to find the total mass of these 4,000 coins. We know that each 2p coin has a mass of 7 grams, so the total mass of the coins is:

total mass of the coins = 7 x 4,000

total mass of the coins = 28,000 grams.

Converting into kg,

= 28000/1000

= 28 kilograms
