COMPLETE ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION EQUATIONS WITH INTEGERS

Complete each of the following addition and subtraction equations with the appropriate value.

Problem 1 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

x + 20 = 17

Subtract 20 from both sides.

(x + 20) - 20 = 17 - 20

x + 20 - 20 = -3

x = -3

So,

-3 + 20 = 17

Problem 2 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

-7 + x = 17

Add 7 to both sides.

(-7  + x) + 7 = 17 + 7

-7 + x + 7 = 24

x = 24

So,

-7 + 24 = 17

Problem 3 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

x + 5 = -10

Subtract 5 from both sides.

(x + 5) - 5 = -10 - 5

x + 5 - 5 = -15

x = -15

So,

-15 + 5 = -10

Problem 4 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

-12 + x = -19

Add 12 to both sides.

(-12 + x) + 12 = -19 + 12

-12 + x + 12 = -7

x = -7

So,

-12 + (-7) = -19

Problem 5 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

-18 + x = -20

Subtract 20 from both sides.

(-18 + x) + 18 = -20 + 18

-18 + x + 18 = -20 + 18

x = -2

So,

-18 + (-2) = -20

Problem 6 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

-11 + x = -17

Add 11 to both sides.

(-11 + x) + 11 = -17 + 11

-11 + x + 11 = -6

x = -6

So,

-11 + (-6) = -17

Problem 7 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

18 + x = 9

Subtract 18 from both sides.

(18 + x) - 18 = 9 - 18

18 + x - 18 = -9

x = -9

So,

18 + (-9) = 9

Problem 8 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

x - 5 = 23

Add 5 to both sides.

(x - 5) + 5 = 23 + 5

x - 5 + 5 = 28

x = 28

So,

28 - 5 = 23

Problem 9 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

x - 25 = -17

Add 25 to both sides.

(x - 25) + 25 = -17 + 25

x - 20 + 20 = 8

x = 8

So,

8 - 25 = -17

Problem 10 :

Solution :

Let x be the missing integer.

40 - x = 28

Add x to both sides.

(40 - x) + x = 28 + x

40 + x - x = 28 + x

40 = 28 + x

Subtract 28 from both sides.

40 - 28 = (28 + x) - 28

12 = 28 + x - 28

12 = x

So,

40 - 12 = 28

Problem 11 :

Choose the correct addition statement for the following:

complete-the-addition-equation-q1

(a)  6 + 11 = 17    (b)  5 + 12 = 17      (c)  6 + 10 = 16

Solution :

Number of cats in the first square = 6

Number of cats in the second square = 11

6 + 11 = 17

So, option a is correct.

Problem 12 :

Bob arranged his coins into 2 rows and 8 columns. How many coins does he have in all?

Solution :

Number of rows = 2

Number of columns = 8

Total number of coins = 2 x 8

= 16 coins

Problem 13 :

Jenna collects seashells. She displayed them as 3 rows and 6 columns. How many seashells are in her collection

Solution :

Number of rows = 3

Number of columns = 6

Number of seashells = 3 x 6

= 18 seasells

Problem 14 :

Use the picture graph to answer the questions:

complete-the-addition-equation-q2.png

a)  How many students like apple crisp the best?

b)  How many more students prefer apple pie to apple juice?

c)  How many fewer students prefer apple crisp than apple pie?

d)  How many students participated in the survey?

e)  Complete the picture graph to show that 3 students  like applesauce the best.

Solution :

a)  3

b) Number of students who prefer apple pie = 7

number of students who prefer apple juice = 5

= 7 - 5

= 2

So, 2 more students prefer apple pie to apple juice.

c)  Number of students prefer apple crisp = 3

Number of students who prefer apple pie = 7

= 7 - 3

= 4

4 fewer students prefer apple crips than apple pie.

d)  Number of students participated in the survey

7 + 3 + 5

= 15 students
