GRADE 6 MATH PRACTICE TEST WITH ANSWERS

Question 1 :

Value of expression

1-2+3-4+5 is

(a)  3     (B)  -3    (c)  0

Solution :

By combing integers with same sign, we get

=  1+3+5-2-4

  =  9-6

  =  3

Question 2 :

2, 3, 9, when used once, can be arranged to form _____distinct 3 digit number

(a)  3     (B)  6    (c)  5

Solution :

To find the number of distinct 3 digit numbers can be arranged, we use the following technique.

___   ___    ___

To fill up the first dash, we have three possibilities.

To fill up the second dash, we have two possibilities.

To fill up the third dash, we have only one possibility.

The number of 3 digit numbers can be created is

  =  3 x 2 x 1

  =  6

So, there are 6 distinct numbers can be created using the above digits.

Question 3 :

The fraction equivalent to 15/27 is

(a)  30/27        (B)  5/9      (c)  3/5

Solution :

By simplifying both numerator and denominator using 3 times table, we get

  =  5/9

Question 4 :

To add 4 on the number line

(a)  Move 4 steps to the left of 0

(B)  Move 4 steps to the left of 0

(c)  Move 0 steps to the left of 1

Solution :

To add 4 on the number line, we have to move 4 steps to the right of 0.

Question 5 :

Anna is standing on a rock that is 7 feet above the sea level. She jumps off the rock and hits another rock 3 feet below and then walks 2 feet down. How many feet did she come down in all?

(a)  3 feet        (B)  5 feet      (c)  2 feet

Solution:

Writing an expression equivalent for the given expression, we get

  =  7-3-2

  =  7-5

  =  2

She came down 2 feet in all.

Question 6 :

Calculate 39x63 + 39 x 37

(a)  3900        (B)  3700      (c)  3950

Solution :

39x63 + 39 x 37

  =  39 (63+37)

  =  39(100)

  =  3900

Question 7 :

The bakers at a Bakery can make 160 bagels in 4 hours. How many bagels can they bake in 16 hours ?

(a)  160        (B)  600      (c)  640

Solution :

160 bagels  =  4 hours

1 hour  =  160/4

  =  40 bagles

16 hours  =  40(16)

  =  640 bagles

Question 8 :

Evaluate :

14 + 6 × 3 – 8 ÷ 2

(a)  16        (B)  28      (c)  64

Solution :

14 + 6 × 3 – 8 ÷ 2

Using PEMDAS, we perform multiplication and division.

  =  14 + 6 × 38 ÷ 2

  =  14 + 18 - 4

Then addition and subtraction.

  =  32 - 4

=  28

Question 9 :

Solve

-(2-x)  =  5

(a)  2        (B)  5      (c)  7

Solution :

-2+x  =  5

x  =  5 + 2

x  =  7

Question 10 :

Simplify :

(2x3 + 5x2) − (12x + 2x2)

Solution :

(2x3 + 5x2) − (12x + 2x2)

  =  2x3+5x2−12x-2x2

  =  2x3+5x2-2x2−12x

  =  2x3+3x2−12x
