Problem 1 :

In a school there are 458 boys and 524 girls. Find the number of students in this school. 

Solution :

Number of boys in the school = 458

Number of girls = 524

Total number of students = 458 + 524

= 982

Problem 2 :

Dora got $325 from her father and $289 from her mother. How much money does she have now?

Solution :

Amount received from her father = $325

Amount received from her mother = $289

Total amount she has received = 325 + 289

= 614

Problem 3 :

Gary played a car game and scored 453 points in first round and 673 points in second round. The game was over after the second round. How many points did he have at the end of the game?

Solution :

Score in first round = 453

Score in the second roung = 673

Number of points at the end of the game = 453 + 673

= 1126

So, at the end of the game Gary got 1126 points in all.

Problem 4 :

There are 230 lions and 140 tigers in a forest. These are the only wild animals in the forest. Find the total number of wild animals in the forest.

Solution :

Number of lions = 230

Number of tigers = 140

Total number of animals = 230 + 140

= 370 animals

Problem 5 :

In a public telephone booth, 243 calls are made before noon and 389 calls are made after noon. Find the number of calls made in a day. 

Solution :

Number of calls made before noon = 243

Number of calls made after noon = 389

Total number of calls made = 243 + 389

= 632

Problem 6 :

A movie rental shop has 5416 old DVDs and 6986 new DVDs. What is the total number of DVDs in the shop? 

Solution :

Number of old DVDs = 5416

Number of new DVDs = 6986

Total number of DVDs = 5416 + 6986

= 12402 DVDs

Problem 7 :

In a grand musical show, 1201 men and 1389 women participated. What is the total number of participants?

Solution :

Number of men = 1201

Number of women = 1389

Total number of participants = 1201 + 1389

= 2590

Problem 8 :

Daniel jogs 1300 m and runs 1800 m. Find the total distance covered.

Solution :

Distance covered in jogging = 1300 m

Distance covered in running = 1800 m

Total distance covered = 1300 + 1800

= 3100 m

Problem 9 :

A famous dictionary contains 2012 pages. A new version includes 1003 more pages. What is the total number of pages in a new version?

Solution :

Number of pages in dictionary = 2012

Number of pages in new version = 2012 + 1003

= 3015 pages

Problem 10 :

There are 3289 birds in a bird sanctuary. 1438 more birds join during summer. Find the number of birds in summer.

Solution :

Number of birds in sanctuary = 3289

Number of birds that will join in summer = 1438 more

Total number of birds in summer = 3289 + 1438

= 4727 birds

Problem 11 :

The population of a New York City was 8,363,710 in 2008. It was expected to increase by 1,201,987 by the end of 2009. What was the expected population of New York City at the end of 2009?

Solution :

Total population in 2008 = 8363710

Expected increase in 2009 = 1201987

Expected population at 2009 = 8363710 + 1201987

= 9565697

Problem 12 :

Mr. Jackson wrote a book on Fairy Tales and released 50, 525 copies. Because the book was popular among the readers, the publishers decided to publish a second edition with 40,399 copies. Find the total number of copies published.

Solution :

Number of books in the first edition = 50525

Number of books in the second edition = 40399

Total number of copies = 50525 + 40399

= 90924 copies

Problem 13 :

In the society library, there are 398,456 old books. The management decided to add 67,876 new books. How many books will be there in library? 

Solution :

Number of old books = 398,456

Number of new books = 67,876

Total number of books in the library = 398456 + 67876

= 466332

Problem 14 :

A company manufactures 523,500 bolts on Monday and 324,800 bolts on Tuesday. Find the total number of bolts manufactured on those two days

Solution :

Number of bolts produced on Monday = 523500

Number of bolts produced on Tuesday = 324800

= 523500 + 324800

= 848300

Problem 15 :

In this sequence, the rule to get the next number is

Multiply by 2 and then add 3.

Write the missing numbers.

___, 25, 53, ___

Solution :

___, 25, 53, ___ 

To find the number next to 53, we have to follow the rule

= 53 x 2 + 3

= 106 + 3

= 109

To find the first number which lies in front of 25, we have to use the rule in reverse order.

Subtract 5 and divide by 2.

= (25 - 5) / 2

= 20/2

= 10

So, the required sequence is 10, 25, 53, 109, ........
