= 137 + 269 + 63

By grouping,

= 137 + 269 + 63

= 137 + 63 + 269

= 200 + 269

= 469

Problem 3 :

987 + 241 + 159

Solution :

= 987 + 241 + 159

By grouping,

= 987 + 241 + 159

= 987 + 400

= 900 + 400 + 87

= 1387

Problem 4 :

163 + 979 + 21

Solution :

163 + 979 + 21

By grouping,

= 163 + 979 + 21

= 163 + 1000

= 1163

Problem 5 :

567 + 167 + 33

Solution :

567 + 167 + 33

By grouping,

= 567 + 167 + 33

= 567 + (167 + 33)

= 567 + 200

= 767

Problem 6 :

364 + 779 + 636

Solution :

364 + 779 + 636

By grouping,

= 300 + 64 + 779 + 600 + 36

= (300 + 600) + (64 + 36) + 779

= 900 + 100 + 779

= 1000 + 779

= 1779

Problem 7 :

978 + 777 + 22

Solution :

978 + 777 + 22

By grouping,

= 900 + 78 + 700 + 77 + 22

= (900 + 700) + (78 + 22) + 77

= 1600 + 100 + 77

= 1700 + 77

= 1777

Problem 8 :

99 + 899 + 1901

Solution :

99 + 899 + 1901

By grouping,

= 99 + 800 + 99 + 1900 + 1

= (99 + 1) + (800 + 1900) + 99

Problem 9 :

89 + 75 + 25 + 11

Solution :

89 + 75 + 25 + 11

= (89 + 11) + (25 + 75)

= 100 + 100

= 200

Problem 10 :

Find the sum of 5, 7 and 8

Solution :

The sum of 5, 7 and 8

= 5 + 7 + 8

= 12 + 8

= 20

So, the sum of 5, 7 and 8 is 20.

Problem 11 :

Find the difference between 19 and 56

Solution :

Difference between 19 and 56.

= 56 - 19

= 37

Problem 12 :

Find the sum of the first 10 natural numbers

Solution :

The first 10 natural numbers are

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

= 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10

= (1 + 9) + (2 + 8) + (3 + 7) + (4 + 6) + (5 + 10)

= 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 15

= 55

Problem 13 :

Find by how much 639 exceeds 483.

Solution :

483 exceeds by how much to receive 639

483 + x = 639

x = 639 - 483

= 156

Problem 14 :

What number must be increased by 374 to get 832?

Solution :

Let x be the number increased with 374.

x + 374 = 832

x = 832 - 374

= 458

So, the required number is 458.

Problem 15 :

What number must be decreased by 674 to get 3705?

Solution :

Let x be the required number.

x - 674 = 3705

x = 3705 + 674

= 4379

So, the required number is 4379.

Problem 16 :

Mount Cook in New Zealand is 3765 m above sea level, whereas Mount Manaslu in Nepal is 8163 m high. How much higher is Mount Manaslu than Mount Cook?

Solution :

Height of Mount cook = 3765 m

Height of Mount Manaslu = 8163 m

Difference between the heights = 8163 - 3765

= 4398

Problem 17 :

In a golf tournament Vijay won the first prize of $463 700. Aaron came second, winning $238000. What was the difference between the two prizes? What would they each have won if they had tied?

Solution :

Winning amount of first prize = $463700

Winning amount of second prize = $238000

Difference between the prizes = 463700 - 238000

= 225700

Problem 18 :

My bank account balance was $7667: If I withdrew amounts of $1379, $2608 and $937, what is my bank balance now? 

Solution :

Balance amount = $7667

Withdrawal amount = 1379, 2608 and 937

Balance amount = 7667 - (1379 + 2608 + 937)

= 7667 - 4924

= 2743

Problem 19 :

Sally stands on some scales with a 15 kg dumbbell in each hand. If the scales read 92 kg, what does she weigh?

Solution :

Weight of dumbbell = 15 kg

Weight of two dumbbells = 2(15)

= 30 kg

weight of Sally + weight of dumbbells = 92 kg

Weight of Sally + 30 = 92 kg

Wight of Sally = 92 - 30

= 62 kg
