Answers

Question 1 :

-3 + 6

Answer :

On a number line, start at 0 and move left to -3.

To add 6, move right 6 units.

-3 + 6  =  3

Question 2 :

-2 - (-9)

Answer :

On a number line, start at 0 and move left to -2.

To subtract -9, move right 9 units.

-2 - (-9)  =  7

Question 3 :

Add -5 and -17.

Answer :

=  -5 + (-17)

Same signs : add the absolute values.

(5 + 17  =  22)

Both numbers are negative, so the sum is negative.

=  -22

Question 4 :

Add -14 and 6.

Answer :

=  -14 + 6

Different signs : subtract the absolute values.

(14 - 6  =  8)

Use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

=  -8

Question 5 :

Add 6 and -13.

Answer :

=  6 + (-13)

Different signs : subtract the absolute values.

(13 - 6  =  7)

Use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

=  -7

Question 6 :

Add 7.3 and -5.8.

Answer :

=  7.3 + (-5.8)

Different signs : subtract the absolute values.

(7.3 - 5.8  =  1.5)

Use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

=  1.5

Question 7 :

Subtract 11 from 8.

Answer :

=  8 - 11

To subtract 11, add -11.

=  8 + (-11)

Different signs : subtract absolute values.

(11 - 8  =  2)

Use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

=  -2

Question 8 :

Subtract -15 from -4.

Answer :

=  -4 - (-15)

To subtract -15, add 15.

=  -4 + 15

Different signs : subtract absolute values.

(15 - 4  =  11)

Use the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.

=  11

Question 9 :

Subtract 3/8 from -1/8.

Answer :

To subtract 3/8, add -38.

=  (-1/8) + (-3/8)

Same signs : add absolute values.

(1/8 + 3/8  =  4/8  =  1/2)

Both numbers are negative, so the sum is negative.

=  -1/2

Question 10 :

Subtract -6 from 34.5.

Answer :

=  34.5 - (-6)

To subtract -6, add 6.

=  34.5 + 6

Same signs : add absolute values.

(34.5 + 6  =  40.5)

Both numbers are positive, so the sum is negative.

=  40.5
