Question 1 :

Two coins contain silver and copper in the ratio 4:5 and 7:15.Which of them contain more silver?

(A) First coin      (B) Second coin        (C) Both of them

Solution :

Ratio of silver to copper in the first coin is 4 : 5

Ratio of silver to copper in the second coin is 7 : 15

By multiplying the first ratio by 3, we get

12 : 15

So, the first coin contains more silver.

Question 2 :

18 mangoes cost $27. What will 15 mangoes cost?

(A) $5.5    (B) $10.5    (C) $22.5

Solution :

Cost of 18 mangoes  =  27

Cost of 1 mango  =  27/18  =  1.5

Cost of 15 mangoes  =  15(1.5)

  =  22.5

Cost of 15 mangoes is $22.5

Question 3 :

A train goes 280 km in 4 hours. How far will it go in 24 hours?

(A)  1320       (B) 1500      (C) 1680

Solution :

Distance covered in 4 hours  =  280 m

Distance covered  =  280/4

  =  70 m

Distance covered in 24 hours  =  24(70)

  =  1680 m

Question 4 :

There are 50 pages in a magazine. 12% of the pages have pictures on them. How many pages of the magazine have no pictures on them?

(A)  50 pages      (B)  44 pages      (C)  30 pages

Solution :

Percentage of pages have no picture  =  100 - 12

  =  88

Number of pages which have no picture  =  88% of 50

=  (88/100) ⋅ 50

=  44 pages

Question 5 :

John receives $750 a month from his mother. If he spends 55% of it on food, how much does he spend on food?

(A) $505.5       (B) $412.5       (C) $300.5

Solution :

Amount he spent for food  =  55% of 750

  =  (55/100) ⋅ 750

  =  412.5

Question 6 :

Find the simple interest on $3000 at the rate of 4% per annum for 2 years  ?

(A) $240     (B) $300       (C)  150

Solution :

Principal  =  3000

Rate of interest  =  4%

Number of years  =  2

Simple interest  =  PNR / 100

  =  (3000 ⋅ 2 ⋅ 4)/100

  =  240

Hence the required interest is $240.

Question 7 :

Find the average of 4, 10, 18, 8

(A)  25        (B)  50       (C)  64

Solution :

Average of 4, 10, 18, 8 :

  =  (4 + 10 + 18 + 8)/4

  =  40/4

  =  10

Question 8 :

In a class of 55 of pupils, 44 are boys. What percentage of the pupils are girls

(A)  20%        (B) 15%       (C)  30%

Solution :

Total number of students  =  55

Number of boys  =  44

Number of girls  =  55 - 44

  =  11

Percentage of girls  =  (11/55) ⋅ 100%

  =  20%

Question 9 :

What is the next number of the pattern ?

320, 160, 80, 40, _______

(A)  20      (B)  17       (C)  40

Solution :

By observing the sequence, we get every term by dividing the previous term by 2.

So, the next term will be 40/2, that is 20.

Question 10 :

Add 6a + 2a + 8a

(A)  11a       (B) 16a      (C)  12a

Solution :

6a + 2a + 8a

By adding 6, 2 and 8, we get 16. So, the answer will be 16a.

Question 11 :

Lizzy's 3/5 of her money is equal to 3/8 of Richard's money. If Lizzy has 75 dollars, how much money does Richard have?

(A)  120       (B) 135      (C)  150    (D)  180

Solution :

Let Lizzy's amount be L and Richard's amount be R.

3/5 of L = 3/8 of R

3/5 of 75 = 3/8 of R

3(75)/5 = 3R/8

3(15) = 3R/8

R = 45 (8/3)

= 15 (8)

= 120

So, the required amount of Richard is $120

Question 12 :

Hassan spent 35% of his monthly allowance on food and 2/5 of the remaining allowance on transport. What percentage of his allowance was left ?

(A)  65%       (B) 61%      (C)  39%    (D)  25%

Solution :

Let x be the monthly allowance.

Amount spent of food = 35% of x

Remaining amount = (100 - 35)% of x

= 65% of x

Amount spent on transport = 2/5 of 65% of x

= 2/5  65/100 x

= 130x/(5⋅100)

= 26x/100

= 26% of x

Amount left = (100 - 35 - 26)% of x

= 39% of x

So, option C is correct.

Question 13 :

The figure is made up of two identical semicircles with radius 21 m. Find the perimeter of the figure in terms of π.

5th-grade-math-questions-q13.png

(A)  21 πm       (B) (21π + 21) m       (C)  42 πm

(D)  (42π + 42) m

Solution :

Radius of semicircle = 21 m

Perimeter of semicircle = (πr + 2r)

Perimeter of figure = 2(πr) + 2r

= 2π(21) + 2(21)

= 42 π + 42

So, option D is correct.

Question 14 :

Jack drew three triangles to form a figure. The areas of the triangles were in the ratio of 1 : 8 : 12. He then shaded some parts of the figure as shown. What is the ratio of the total area of the shaded parts to the area of figure ?

5th-grade-math-questions-q14.png

(A)  5 : 12      (B) 5 : 21     (C)  7 : 12   (D)  2 : 3

Solution :

Areas of the triangles from largest to smallest are

12x, 8x and 1x.

To find the area of the shaded region which is outside the white portion, we do

= 12x - 8x

= 4x

Area of shaded parts = 4x + 1x

= 5x

area of small triangle : area of large triangle :

= 5x : 12x

= 5 : 12

So, option A is correct.

Question 15 :

4 years ago, the ratio of Calvin's age to Lina's age is 2 : 7. In 8 years time, Calvin's age will be 2/5 of Lina's age. How old is Calvin now ?

(A) 10 years old     (B) 18 years old

(C) 22 years old     (D) 30 years old

Solution :

Let 2x and 7x be the ratio between ages of Calvin's age and Lina's age 4 years ago respectively.

After 8 years, then Calvin's age = 2x + 4

After 8 years, then Lina's age = 7x + 4

2x + 4 = 2/5 of (7x + 4)

5(2x + 4) = 2(7x + 4)

10x + 20 = 14x + 8

10x - 14x = 8 - 20

-4x = -12

x = 3

Applying x = 3 in 2x, we get 6. This is age 4 years ago, to find the present age, we add 4. so, we get 10 years.
