Question 1 :

I have $3 If I spend one-fourth of it, how much money, in dollars, do I have left?

$2.25    (B) $1.50     (C) $1.80

Solution :

Money i had  =  3

Money spent  =  1/4 of 3

=  3/4

Remaining amount i have  =  3 - (3/4)

=  (12 - 3)/4

  =  9/4

  =  2.25

Hence the remaining amount is 2.25.

Question 2 :

If I am three years younger than Jae, Jae is 5 years younger than Ben, and Ben is 13, how old am I ?

(A) 2      (B) 4         (C) 5

Solution :

Age of Ben  =  13

Age of Jae  =  13 - 5  =  8

Age of me  =  8 - 3  =  3

Then i am 3 years old.

Question 3 :

The cost of BCA math camp is $50 per student. However, Mrs.Jennifer buys 5 dozen donuts every day for the 16 days. If donuts cost $10 per dozen, how many students need to attend math camp in order for Mrs.Jennifer to break even?

(A) 14       (B) 20       (C) 16

Solution :

Cost of donuts that she buy :

5 dozens every day for 16 days.

Quantity of donuts  =  5(16)

  =  80

Cost of 1 dozen donut  =  80 (10)  

  =  800

More number of students need to attened  =  800/50

=  16

Hence 16 is the answer.

Question 4 :

Joseph wants a new bicycle. He earns $3 a day for taking out the trash. If the bicycle costs $60, how many days must Joseph take out the trash for ?

(A) 10       (B) 20        (C) 15

Solution :

Money he is earning everyday  =  3

Cost of bicycle  =  60

More number of days he has to work  =  60/3

  =  20 days

Hence 20 days is the answer.

Question 5 :

Calculate 22 - 32 + 42

(A) 20      (B) 11       (C) 15

Solution :

22 - 32 + 4

  =  4 - 9 + 16

  =  20 - 9

  =  11

Question 6 :

Find the missing term of the following 3 + _________ + 4000 + 60 + 70000 = 74563

(A) 500         (B) 300       (C) 800

Solution :

Let x be the missing term

3 + x + 4000 + 60 + 70000  =  74563

74063 + x  =  74563

x  =  74563 - 74063

x  =  500

Hence the missing term is 500.

Question 7 :

Find the reduced fraction of the decimal 0.25

(A) 25/100      (B) 1/2     (C) 1/4

Solution :

0.25  =  0.25 (100/100)

  =  25/100

  =  1/4

Question 8 :

What is the formula to find the perimeter of rectangle

(A) 2(l + b)    (B) l x b      (C) 4a

Solution :

Perimeter of rectangle  =  2(l + b)

Question 9 :

Complete the equivalent ratio 3/30  =  x/60

(A) 6     (B) 7    (C) 4

Solution :

3/30  =  x/60

  x  =  (3/30) 60

  x  =  6

Question 10 :

Find the area of the circle which is having the radius 3cm.

(A) 18π      (B) 9π      (C) 15 π

Solution :

Area of circle  =  πr2

r  =  3

  =  π(3)2

  =  9π

Question 11 :

Ann Ben and Cara had some money. Ann and Ben had $2661. Ben and Cara had $5874. Cara had 4 times as much money as Ann. How much money did Ben have ?

Solution :

Let A, B and C be the amount had by Ann, Ben and Cara respectively.

A + B = 2661 -----(1)

B + C = 5874 -----(2)

C = 4 A -----(3)

Applying the value of C in (2), we get

B + 4A = 5874 ----(4)

(1) - (4)

A + B - (B + 4A) = 2661 - 5874

-3A = -3213

A = 3213/3

= 1071

Applying the value of A in (1), we get

1071 + B = 2661

B = 2661 - 1071

= 1590

So, the amount Ben has is $1590.

Question 12 :

There are 1320 marbles in box A. Box A had 720 more marbles than Box B. Some marbles were moved from Box A to Box B. Box B then had 5 times as many as Box A. How many marbles were moved from Box A to Box B ?

Solution :

Number of marbles in box A = 1320

Number of marbles in Box B = 1320 - 720

= 600 

The total number of marbles across both boxes does not change:

= 1320 + 600

= 1920

After moving the marbles, Box B has 5 times as many marbles as Box A. This means the total quantity is split into 6 equal parts (1 part for Box A + 5 parts for Box B).

1 part = 1920/6

= 320 marbles

Marbles moved = 1320 - 320

= 1000 marbles

Question 13 :

Miss Lee had 6/7 kg of flour. She used 1/6 of it on Friday  and 1/7 kg on Saturday. How much flour has she left ?

A) 2/7 kg     (B) 4/7 kg     (C) 13/42 kg    (D) 23/42 kg

Solution :

Quantity of flour = 6/7 kg

Quantity of flour used on Friday = 1/6 of 6/7

= 1/7 kg

Quantity of flour used on Saturday = 1/7 kg

Quantity of flour used = 6/7 - (1/7 + 1/7)

= 6/7 - 2/7

= 4/7 kg

Question 14 :

A class of students were divided into two groups, A and B. There were twice as many students in group A as group B. 1/4 of the students in group A were girls. 2/3 of the students in group B were girls. What fraction of the students in the class were girls ?

Solution :

Let x be the number of students in group B.

Number of students in group A = 2x

Total number of students = 3x

girls in group A = 1/4 of 2x ==> x/2

Girls in group B = 2/3 of x ==> 2x/3

Total number of girls in both classes = x/2 + 2x/3

= (3x + 4x)/6

= 7x/6

Fraction of girls = (7x/6) / 3x

= 7x/18x

= 7/18
