Formulate the following problems as a pair of equations,and hence find their solutions:

(ii)  Three chairs and two tables cost \$700 and five chairs and three tables cost \$1100.What is the total cost of 2 chairs and 3 tables.

Solution:

Let x be the cost of one chair

Let y be the cost of one table

To form the first equation we have to consider this particular information from the question that is three chairs and two tables cost \$700

3 x + 2 y = 700  ----- (1)

To form the first equation we have to consider this particular information from the question that is five chairs and three tables cost \$1100

5 x + 3 y = 1100  ----- (2)

Multiply the first equation by 3 we get

9 x + 6 y = 2100

Multiply the second equation by 2 we get

10 x + 6 y = 2200

9 x + 6 y = 2100

10 x + 6 y = 2200

-x   = -100

x = 100

Substitute x = 100 in the first equation we get

3 x + 2 y = 700

3 (100) + 2 y = 700

300 + 2 y = 700

2 y = 700 - 300

2 y = 400

y = 400/2

Cost of one table = \$200

Verification:

3 x + 2 y = 700

3(100) + 2(200) = 700

300 + 400 = 700

(vi) A train traveled a certain distance at a uniform speed. If the train had been 6 km/hr faster,it would have taken 4 hours less than the scheduled time. If the train were slower by 6km/hr, then it would have taken 6 hours more than the scheduled time. Find the distance covered by the train. Solution
