Problem 1 :
Find the missing value in the given proportion.
(i) 2 : 5 = 6 : x
(ii) 16 : 20 = x : 35
(iii) 3 : 4 = 6 : x
(iv) 3 : 6 = 12 : x
(v) 2 : 5 = x : 15
(vi) 7 : 21 = x : 33
(vii) 15 : 25 = 30 : x
(viii) x : 18 = 32 : 48
(ix) 5 : 100 = x : 40
(x) x : 12 = 33 : 44
Problem 2 :
A disaster relief team consists of engineers and doctors in the ratio of 2 : 5.
a) If there are 18 engineers, find the number of doctors.
b) If there are 65 doctors, find the number of engineers
1. Answer :
(i) 2 : 5 = 6 : x
Product of extremes = Product of means
2x = 5(6)
2x = 30
x = 15
(ii) 16 : 20 = x : 35
16(35) = 20x
x = 16(35)/20
x = 28
(iii) 3 : 4 = 6 : x
3x = 4(6)
x = 24/3
x = 8
(iv) 3 : 6 = 12 : x
3x = 6(12)
x = 72/3
x = 24
(v) 2 : 5 = x : 15
2(15) = 5x
x = 30/5
x = 6
(vi) 7 : 21 = x : 33
7(33) = 21x
x = 7(33)/21
x = 11
(vii) 15 : 25 = 30 : x
15(x) = 25(30)
x = 25(30)/15
x = 50
(viii) x : 18 = 32 : 48
x(48) = 18(32)
x = 18(32)/48
x = 12
(ix) 5 : 100 = x : 40
5(40) = 100x
x = 5(40)/100
x = 2
(x) x : 12 = 33 : 44
x(44) = 12(33)
x = 12(33)/44
x = 9
2. Answer :
Let 2x and 5x are number of engineers and doctors respectively.
(a) Number of engineers = 18
2x = 18
x = 9
Number of doctors = 5x
= 5(9)
= 45
b) If there are 65 doctors, find the number of engineers
Number of doctors = 65
5x = 65
x = 65/5
x = 13
Number of engineers = 2x
= 2(13)
= 26
Number of engineers is 26.
