ADD SUBTRACT MULTIPLY AND DIVIDE SCIENTIFIC NOTATION

Example 1 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(2.75 x 107) + (1.23 x 108)

Solution :

=  (2.75 x 107) + (1.23 x 108)

=  (2.75 x 107) + (1.23 x 10x 101)

=  107(2.75 + 1.23 x 101)

=  (2.75 + 12.3) x 107

=  15.05 x 107

=  1.505 x 107 + 1

=  1.505 x 108

Example 2 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(1.598 x 1017) – (4.58 x 1015)

Solution :

=  (1.598 x 1017) – (4.58 x 1015)

 =  1015(1.598 x 102 - 4.58)

=  1015(159.8 - 4.58)

=  155.22 x 1015

=  1.5522 x 1015 + 2

=  1.5522 x 1017

Example 3 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(1.02 x 1010) x (1.20 x 10–3)

Solution :

=  (1.02 x 1010) x (1.20 x 10–3)

=  1.02 x 1.20 x 1010-3

=  1.224 x 107

Example 4 :

Simplify the following expression and give your answer in scientific notation.

(8.41 x 104) ÷ (4.3 x 105)

Solution :

=  (8.41 x 104) ÷ (4.3 x 105)

  =  (8.41/4.3) x 104-5

  =  1.955 x 10-1
