SOLVING PAIR OF LINEAR EQUATIONS USING ELIMINATION METHOD WORKSHEET

(1)  Solve the following pairs of equations by reducing them to a pair of linear equations

(i)  (1/2x) + (1/3y)  =  2 and (1/3x) + (1/2y)  =  13/6

Solution

(ii)  (2/√x) + (3/√y)  =  2 and (4/√x) – (9/√y)  =  -1

Solution

(iii)  (4/x)   + 3 y  =  14 and (3/x) – 4 y  =  23

Solution

(iv)  10/(x + y) + 2/(x –y)  =  4 and

15/(x + y) – 5/(x – y)  =  -2               Solution

(v)  1/(3x + y) + 1/(3x – y)  =  3/4 and

1/2(3x + y) - 1/2(3x – y)  =  -1/8           Solution

(vi)  5/(x – 1) + 1/(y – 2)  =  2 and 6/(x – 1) – 3/(y – 2)  =  1

Solution

(vii)  (7 x - 2 y)/xy  =  5 and (8 x + 7 y)/xy  =  15

Solution

(viii)  6 x + 3 y  =  6 xy and 2 x + 4 y  =  5 xy
