WRITING A MIXED NUMBER AS AN IMPROPER FRACTION

Writing a Mixed Number as an Improper Fraction :

In this section, you will learn, how to write a mixed number as improper fraction.

The picture shown below illustrates how to write a mixed number as an improper fraction.

Writing a Mixed Number as an Improper Fraction - Examples

Example 1 :

Write the following mixed number as improper fraction.

9123

Solution :

We have to do the following steps to write the given mixed number as improper fraction.

Step 1 :

Multiply the denominator 3 by the whole number 91.

Thus, we get 273

Step 2 :

Add this 273 to the numerator 2.

Thus, we get 275.

Step 3 :

Now, form a fraction with this 275 as numerator and 3 (denominator in the given mixed number) as denominator.

Therefore, the required improper fraction is 275/3.

Example 2 :

Write the following mixed number as improper fraction.

2217

Solution :

We have to do the following steps to write the given mixed number as improper fraction.

Step 1 :

Multiply the denominator 7 by the whole number 22.

Thus, we get 154

Step 2 :

Add this 154 to the numerator 1.

Thus, we get 155.

Step 3 :

Now, form a fraction with this 155 as numerator and 7 (denominator in the given mixed number) as denominator.

Therefore, the required improper fraction is 155/7.

Example 3 :

Write the following mixed number as improper fraction.

60213

Solution :

We have to do the following steps to write the given mixed number as improper fraction.

Step 1 :

Multiply the denominator 13 by the whole number 60.

Thus, we get 780

Step 2 :

Add this 780 to the numerator 2.

Thus, we get 782.

Step 3 :

Now, form a fraction with this 782 as numerator and 13 (denominator in the given mixed number) as denominator.

Therefore, the required improper fraction is 782/13.

Example 4 :

Write the following mixed number as improper fraction.

938

Solution :

We have to do the following steps to write the given mixed number as improper fraction.

Step 1 :

Multiply the denominator 8 by the whole number 9.

Thus, we get 72

Step 2 :

Add this 72 to the numerator 3.

Thus, we get 75.

Step 3 :

Now, form a fraction with this 75 as numerator and 8 (denominator in the given mixed number) as denominator.

Therefore, the required improper fraction is 75/8.

Example 5 :

Write the following mixed number as improper fraction.

111315

Solution :

We have to do the following steps to write the given mixed number as improper fraction.

Step 1 :

Multiply the denominator 15 by the whole number 11.

Thus, we get 165

Step 2 :

Add this 165 to the numerator 13.

Thus, we get 178.

Step 3 :

Now, form a fraction with this 178 as numerator and 15 (denominator in the given mixed number) as denominator.

Therefore, the required improper fraction is 178/15.
