UNDERSTANDING INTEGERS

What is an integer in math ?

An integer is a whole number (not a fractional number) that can be positive, negative, or zero. Examples of integers are: -5, 1, 5, 8, 97, and 3,043. Examples of numbers that are not integers are: -1.43, 1 3/4, 3.14, .09, and 5,643.1.

Types of integers ?

We can classify integers as two types

(i) Positive integers

(ii) Negative integers.

Positive numbers are numbers that are greater than zero. Numbers can be positive, negative or zero. Zero is neither positive nor negative.

The sign that is used is the placement of a minus sign attached to the number. This indicates that numbers with a negative sign are less than zero. These are called negative numbers.

Example 1 :

The temperature on Tuesday is 5°C. On Wednesday it is 6° colder.

Solution :

To show the temperature on Tuesday, we have to use positive sign.

Temperature on Tuesday  =  + 5°C

To show the temperature on Wednesday, we have to use negative sign. Because it is colder temperature, which is less than zero degree.

Temperature on Wednesday  =  - 5°C

Example 2 :

An aeroplane is flying at a height two thousand meter above the ground.

Solution :

To represent the height of aeroplane, we have to use positive sign.

Height of aeroplane  =  + 2000 meter

Example 3 :

A submarine is moving at a depth, eight hundred metre below the sea level.

Solution :

To represent the current position of submarine, we have to use negative sign. Because it is below the sea level.

Current position of submarine  =  -800 meter

Example 4 :

A deposit of two hundred dollar.

Solution :

Deposit means increase of money in our account, to represent this situation we have to use positive sign.

Deposit of two hundred dollar  =  +$200

Example 5 :

Withdrawal of seven hundred dollar.

Solution :

Withdrawal means decrease of money from our account, to represent this situation we have to use negative sign.

Withdrawal of seven hundred dollar  =  -$700

Example 6 :

2 more inches of snow this winter than last winter

Solution :

We use the sign positive for the word "more", we use the sign negative for the word "less"

This year snow level than last winter  =  +2
