Subtraction

Subtraction means removing some objects from a group. 7-3=4 means, taking away or removing 3 objects from a group of 7 objects. remaining 4 objects are there.

It is also called as binary operator. Because, if we want to use this, we need at-least two terms like “8 – 5 = 3”. Here we are using this binary operator between the two terms 8 and 5, That is why, this is called as “Binary operator”. Let us consider some real–life examples for this binary-operator.

Example 1:In a school, there is class with strength 30 in which the total number of number of boys is 12. If we want to find the total number of girls in the same class, we have to use this binary operator as following.

30 – 12 = 18, hence the total number of girls in that class is 18.

Example 2: I am going to a store to purchase something. For that purchase, I bring $100. The bill for my purchase in the store is $75. I am giving $100 to the store keeper. How much will he return to me?.

To answer this question, we have to use this binary operator. That is, to find the balance which has to be returned by the store keeper, we have to use this binary operator as following.

100 – 75 = 25. So the balance to be returned by the store keeper is $25.

we will have a group of 3 balls after taking away two balls.

So 5-2 = 3 is nothing but subtracting one number from another number.

Some facts

  1. If 0 is taken away from any number, then we will get the same number as the resultant.
  2. The other names for this binary operator is difference and take away
  3. If the number itself taken away from the same number, then 0 is the resultant.
