Ordering numbers

Ordering numbers is the way of arranging the numbers in ascending or descending order. It is very interesting topic for the kids in elementary math. Students can follow the examples we had given and try to do the practice problems on their own.

Ordering numbers: Ascending order:

Ascending order is the way of arranging number from the lowest to highest.

For better understanding we can say Ascending order is climbing up.

Examples

1.  Write the following numbers  in ascending order.

     25, 60, 12, 86, 42 and 11.

 Solution:

To write the number in ascending order, we have to first write the least number, then next lowest number and continuing like this finally we have to write the greatest number.

Here the lowest number is 11, the next least number is 12, continuing like this we have to write the greatest number 86 in the last.

   11, 12, 25, 42, 60 and 86.

2.   Arrange the following numbers in ascending order.

      34,  39,  30,  37,  32,  36 and 38

Solution:

      30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and 39.

3.   Arrange the following numbers in ascending order.

      111,  101,  131,   191,  141,  161, 181

Solution:

      101,  111,   131,  141, 161,  181,  191

Ordering numbers: Descending order:

Descending order is way of arranging the number from the greatest to the lowest. It is like nothing but climbing down the stairs from top to bottom.

Examples:

1.  Write the following numbers in descending order:

      201,  291,  261, 221, 271,  211

Solution:

To arrange the numbers in descending order we have to start from the greatest number and write down the next greatest, so on, and finally we have to write the least number.

Here the greatest one is 291, next highest is 271,  continuing the least one is 201.

So the final answer is

    291,  271, 261, 221, 211, 201.

2.  Write the following numbers in descending order:

  29, 49,19, 59, 99, 69, 39

Solution:

    99, 69, 59, 49, 39, 29, 19.

3.  Write the following numbers in descending order:

   92, 99, 93, 98, 97,95

Solution:

     99, 98, 97, 95, 93, 92.

Problems for practice:

Write the following numbers in both ascending and descending order:

1.   37,  68, 11,  25,  43, 92, 84

2.   399, 999, 799, 599, 199, 499, 299

3.  9, 7, 3, 6, 8, 1, 4.

Note:  Once we find the ascending order, to write the descending order is very easy.  It is just we have to write the numbers in the reverse order.
