MATH TERMS STARTING WITH F

Face :

Face is a surface bounded by edges of a three dimensional solids.

Face of a Polyhedron :

Face of a polyhedron is any of the two dimensional polygons, that makes its boundary of a polyhedron. Each face is a polygon.

Factor :

Factor is a number which divides another number exactly. For example 5 is a factor of 25 and 3 is factor of 27.

Factorial :

Factorial of a number n is a product of consecutive numbers from 1 to n.

It is denoted by n!.

For example 4!  =  1 ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ 4  =  24

Factoring :

The method to break down a number into its factors. we can factor a number. To check whether the give number is a perfect square we need to use prime factorization.

Factor Tree :

A method or graphical representation to find the prime factors of a number.

Fibonacci Sequence :

A sequence of numbers  0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13,...in which each number is equal to the sum of the previous two numbers. It is occurred by recurrence relation.

FOIL Method :

In the word FOIL

F represents multiplying the first terms

O represents multiplying out side terms

I represents multiplying inside terms

L represents multiplying last terms.

Finite Set :

A set which has finite number of elements is called finite set. In other words, a set whose cardinal number is countable or finite is called as finite set.

Empty set is a finite set, because the cardinal number of empty set is 0.

For example:

A  =  {x : x is an even number less than 12}

A  =  {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}. Here the cardinal number of A is 5 that is countable, so A is a finite set.

Fraction :

It consists of two numbers separated by a line. To represent fraction we use horizontal line to separate the upper part (how many parts are taken into consideration) and lower part (the total number of parts). Upper part is called as numerator and lower part is called as denominator.

For example,

In the fraction 3/8

3 = Numerator of the fraction and

8 is the denominator of the fraction.

Function :

Function is also a relation, but the relation has to fulfill some conditions, if it wants to be a function.

The two important conditions for a relation to be as a function.

Let the mapping be done from the set A to set B.

(i) Each element of A has to be involved in mapping.

(ii) Each element of A has to be mapped to at most one element in B.

Fraction into Percent :

General rules for changing a fraction as percentage

Step 1 :

First we have to multiply the given fraction with 100.

Step 2 :

Now we have to multiply the numerator with 100.

Step 3 :

If it is possible we can simplify using tables

Step 4 :

Now we have to write the simplified number with percentage %.

Frequency Distribution :

Frequency distribution is the arrangement of raw data into tabular form. The data can be arranged into classes according to the size along with the corresponding frequencies.

Frequency is how often something occurs

For example Peter played soccer on

  • Sunday morning
  • Sunday evening
  • Wednesday morning
  • Friday evening

Here the frequency is 2 on Sunday and 1 on Wednesday and 1 on Friday. The total number of times is 4 and it is for the whole week.
