Question:

How many pieces of wood each ⅕ m long can be cut from a piece 3m long ?

Basic idea:

In this problem we have 3 m length wood.We need to cut them in to a measure of ⅕ m long. And we need to find how many pieces can be cut from the wood.To solve this problem we have to use the concept division.Because we are going to divide a wooden piece into some equal parts. To find the number of pieces we have to divide the original length of the wood by measurement of each wood.

Solution:

Length of the given wood = 3 m

Length of each piece = 1/5

Length of each pieces which

has been cut                =  Length of wood/(measurement of wood piece)

=  3 ÷ (1/5)

3 can be written as (3/1)

=  (3/1) ÷ (1/5)

Now we have to change the division as multiplication. So that we have to write the second fraction as its reciprocal. And first fraction has to be written as it is.

= (3/1) x (5/1)

=  (3x5)/(1x1)

=  15

So the final answer is 15.

That is 3m wood can be cut into 15 equal parts.
